Well being wealthy is such a subjective term on Gaia.
I consider myself well off and it probably took me two years.
But there are still plenty of Gaians with more gold than myself.
I think it's because of where we frequent, I think most GCDers are well off.
Maybe that's why it seems everyone is rich.

Over summer break I made a fortune in the marketplace, that's how I got my Gaia-tan that I love so much heart My sister used to always be richer than me and I would feel bad when she gave me "great" gifts like the Summoning Tome or the Alice in Wonderland thing. Been here since '06 and never had more than 300k at once xD; Even now I don't have more than 7k.
Most of that was saved up when I was too lazy and didn't feel like buying anything, so I got most of my gold from Daily Chance and items from DC and Aquariums. Oh, and playing around a bit with EIs in the Marketplace.

Been on Gaia since 03, got banned for an incredibly stupid reason on Gaia's behalf, started again around 1-2 years ago.

Having been on the site for so long and being mostly an exchanger, was easy to pick myself back up once I have the capital; of which generously provided by friends.

Big money makers for me were exchanging 03 items, and hoarding - like hundreds of any one item. The Hoarding Guild has helped a bit, despite I disagree on some of their top picks and go my own way; usually making the right decision.

I'd say about less than two years and my account is well along. I've probably got and given, traded, and exchanged over a million gold by now. I have at this moment 140,000 gold (not my highest, it used to be almost 500,000)*Shrug* it's just about being diligent with games and getting gold.

Less than a year I think. During my first Hallowe'en event (2006) I sold every item I won, and made a few thousand K. I used that to buy a few MCs, mostly CoCo Kitty plushies, and sold them off later for tons more.

Then I used all that gold making cosplay avatars and in 2009 I am down to... 1864g. I'm far happier having done cosplays than keeping masses of virtual gold though.
