It's part of japanese lore. The rabbit on the moon makes rice cakes. It's pounding mochi. When the japanese look at the moon, they see the rabbit doing just that. It's pretty cute and it makes more sense than a man or frog on the moon since I can see the rabbit but not the others. :/
