Okay I decided to call my dad (He was a business major Wharton so I often talk to him about business endeavors.) Much like I said we cannot buy up Gaia's stock and own a part of Gaia. It's a privately owned company so those stocks wouldn't really be on the public exchange. Also in order to gain any real effect we would have to buy extreme amounts of stock. Probably in the hundred thousands I would assume. So I don't think buying stocks is the way to go.
Ah, I have found something.

Craig is a liar.

YP: How does Gaia integrate marketing partners or advertisers? What would you say to brands interested in getting into this space?

CS: A major plank in Gaia's business model is sponsorships. Note though that sponsorships will always be secondary to our core mission of building and maintaining an engaging hang-out for teens. That means you won't see billboards and ads flogging products plastered all over Gaia. Instead, we will work with partners to create experiences that are fun and meaningful to our users as well as beneficial to sponsors. Gaians form a huge and savvy community of teenagers that will respond well to like-minded brands who 'get it.' With input from Gaians, we started by creating a white-list of brands that are authentic to the members of the site and therefore are the companies we want to work with.

In this spirit, Gaia recently conducted a promotion with New Line Cinema to promote its movie "The Last Mimzy." Gaians could conduct a short quest that involved previewing the film's trailer and retrieving a virtual Mimzy plushie to accompany their avatars. It was a relatively modest promotion, but it was extraordinarily well-received by the community. Not only were the number of users who participated huge, but they were truly engaged. For example, a number of Forums sprang up to discuss themes addressed in the movie.

So to sum up from Gaia's perspective: brands interested in getting into the space need to understand the community they are entering, and create an experience that is authentic to that community.

I remember when Craig was first introduced to us by Lanzer, it was at that moment I knew something was gonna take a turn.
I remember how Craig tried to kind of win us over by telling us that his kids slept at night with Kiki and Coco plushies, but I'm sure a lot of us are sceptical as to this being true or not...

Perhaps they anticipated an outcry against a business-type coming into control of Gaia and told him to make and account and try to appeal to the masses....who knows really...Detective work is underway. ninja

I thought the same thing... Anytime a small website, or company gains a CEO, big changes are always in store. Not always for the better, as in Gaia's case. confused

Yeah, and it's not as if we don't want Gaia to keep growing, but the way they've been going about it is all wrong, they've just been very careless with how they met their quota for users and income. They don't really consider who they leave out of their quests or what other corporations they affiliate themselves with as long as it helps them meet the standard. sad

Looks like it is a privatley owned company.

Bit of a shame really, with enough people the buying shares was perfectly possible if they were publicly available.

If my memory serves me correctly i think he did, but I forget where...either Lanzer introduced him or he introduced himself...either way it was kind of just a means of informing the handful of users who bother to visit that certain forum that a CEO had come into place on Gaia and then he sold himself to us by using politician charisma! scream

Not all corporations are publicly held. A corporation is just a legal entity that separates personal wealth from corporate wealth. So you can have one private share holder or million public share holders. It all just depends on the company itself.

I remember making long wonderful mature posts full of feedback on how to keep Gaia's goals in order but still connect with the community. To bring in the new but keep the good old stuff around too. That was back in late '05 ear'y '06. It's now early/mid '08 and I feel so sad for Gaia. Gaia is hanging on a thin thread right now. Well I'll do what I can. I revise some stuff and post it in the SF. Hopefully it will help, if not... alas Gaia most likely will be gone forever. I truly hope not. I love this place to death even though I went through the phase of I'm going leave more then once. If things keep on going corporate I'll most likely eventually leave sooner or later.

If it comes to this, I fully support storming Gaia Headquarters and giving Gaia back to the rightful owners.

Anyways, I again, I do what I can and try to get support for good ideas to improve Gaia.

Business politics seem to be the same as it's mainstream kin.

I figure it won't be uncommon to find liars and fakes within the alleged "plan".
Damn, this thread gets updated a lot.
