How can we stop it?
Honestly I don't think we can stop Gaia's Demise, by convincing the Ceo or anyone who has the power over Gaia to make Gaia better.

No, but that shouldn't stop us from fighting for our Gaia. I'll keep fighting until Gaia is nothing but a Neopets knockoff, but I won't stop until it is. If you give up now you're pretty much just letting them win.

Who said I was giving up, I love Gaia, but I don't think this is a battle we can win.

As long as this site is fun, I'm gonna stay there.

What I don't think a lot of you remember is that Lanzer is actually trying to get back complete control of Gaia. He made it for the users, and he doesn't want to see it become Neopets.
Just more evidence of how rule by ivory tower elites can only be bad for the common man, or user in this case.

The most obvious symptom of this infection is the MTV shop, which should be levelled by any means necessary along with all the inappropriate sponsorship we've been seeing.

This happens far too often in fledgling businesses. I would direct Lanzer to the story of the MacDonald brothers. Two young Scottish-Americans start a fast-food chain which quickly became successful with young people.
However, they hired an advertising executive planning on expansion. His name was Ray Kroc. Quickly he conquered the business and eventually owned more in stocks than the MacDonald's themselves and took over.

Take the power back, Lanzer, or you may end up usurped like the MacDonald brothers.

And that's fine, if that's what the devs want to do. But to rip away a project someone has been working on for months and months, proclaim it done, and give them a new baby to work on, whether they want that baby or not, is the wrong way to do things.

gaia wont die, its never been more alive than it has been

and if you want that community spirit or whatever that keeps you here
******** do that, but dont let it interfere with gaias business like...

i dont understand how these deals for them to make more money and bring in more people
are really at the core affecting your time here

other than that, it all goes towards improving the site and the features

if gaia is so great, if that feeling or whatever you have for it is so strong
why are you letting something like this have any change on it?

If Gaia is so alive, why do people who used to be dedicated supporters keep leaving? If Gaia is so alive, why do I hear the same thing again and again from people who have been around for years? If Gaia won't die, why do I see failed internet companies dying all around as the tech bubble bursts? You act like it's not even a possibility that there might be consequences from all these disgruntled users.

Don't belittle 'community spirit'. Community spirit is what keeps people AND keeps people giving money towards this little corner of the internet that could so easily be replaced. I can say this because I work for a company that brings in many millions of dollars more than Gaia every year, and we see keeping 'community spirit' alive as a pretty bloody big priority because of what it means for us and our base. This is not just my personal viewpoint, this is my professional viewpoint. No 'community spirit' equals no ties, no obligation to support, and hence no money. The things that Gaia is losing are not small and unimportant. If I didn't think it was worth making a fuss about, I'd be off vending or chatting with my friends. 'Improving the site' is a pretty subjective thing, but I happen to think that the opinions in this thread are as worthy as any others I've seen.

Of course, I'd have a far more educated viewpoint if I actually had access to the kinds of statistics that Gaia does, but given they aren't giving them to me, I just have to go with what I see around me.

people grow up, people get bored, real life ensues etc
its alot easier to tell people they are quitting because of some s**t on gaia

than tell you there internet is being cut off maybe?
i have no idea

and im not belittling the community spirit one bit
im actually fighting for it

the community spirit is something only the community can have and maintain
its got nothing to do with gaia buisness really.

im sorry but most of this thread just sounds like the typical "lol sellout dribble"
and i just dont see how gaia making more money has to do with us

other than that in the long run, we benefit

You know, maybe Gaia IS like Rome.

Rome started off as a small part of prosperous Greece, an offshoot or colony. It quickly grew. Became autocratic. Drew more and more of the culture away from Greece, copying and corrupting it to serve its own purpose. Greece was diminished and eventually destroyed, and Rome grew to control everything, whether the citizens of Greece liked it or not. Sure, their gods were still there. They were just "renamed." Perhaps to appease corporate sponsors. No more philosophers and science and social discourse. No, all that mattered to Rome was collecting taxes and expanding and waging war.

Sounds a heck of a lot like what's happening to Gaia to me.

Hm, thats insightful of you Alex and I see your point o.o

One difference though, the citizens of Rome loved Rome for what it was. We are trying to change Gaia, make it revert back to what it was.

Oh, I'm sure there were citizens of Rome that didn't love Rome for what it was too ;D

But yes, I do agree with this, in this way, it IS like Rome.

And there are also people who don't like what the US is right now :3 I was just pointing out that a large portion of Rome liked it for what it is, unlike our current situation.

I know what you meant, I just felt the need to point out that there were people, like us, that didn't like the situation, only this time, I think that if we exclude the 11 year olds and the noobs that don't give a s**t whatsoever, we that do not like it, is quite a lot of the regular users.

Exactly, this is partially why I think that they may listen to us. I mean, even people with money on their mind have to think about who populates the site. Do they really want it to be a bunch of illiterate punks, or do they want to have at least some intelligence to grace the site?

You've obviously never worked in software development. I'm pretty sure it's called having a bad, unrealistic manager with no understanding of how software development works.

Now I know what happens to all the stupid business majors in college. They go on to become highly successful CEOs and drive companies into the ground, because they couldn't give two bits less about what the company does or stands for. They just squeeze it until it runs dry, then hop to another one, then mark their previous companies as "experience."

Mmm, buzzwords. Let's synergize our collective priorities to experience upward developmental expansion in our target marketshares!

If you hang around in the GCD for a week or so you'll see the same things: Troll thread, repeat threads, recycled threads, speculation threads. We have nothing to work with because, oh I don't know, Gaia really hasn't done anything exciting to show us. Can we really just make up plots? No, I don't think we can.

I don't know if it's as cut-and-dry as that, though; Gaia does need people who know how to run a business if they intend to stay in business.
And at this point, it's naive to expect they won't be a business at all...
The bigger the site, the bigger the wig. And Gaia needs a pretty bigwig.
I was nearly done reading Arrowchan's M-M-M-MONSTER POST on page 3 when I realized something.

No one respects this website. At least not anymore.
Yes, duh, people are mean on teh internets lol but I've been around here long enough to know that the level of complaining and bitchiness that is reflected, at least in the GCD, is new. When I started to post in this forum around 2005 or 2006 it wasn't like this at all. We were all so busy enjoying ourselves, coming up with new ideas for the plots, for items and for every damn thing this site does that if something went wrong only newer users or trolls were the ones complaining.

Now I dunno exactly when it started up, and I don't know exactly how it ties into the changes Gaia has gone through but if anyone is going to start behaving themselves and being polite as they were and as they should be then I think Gaia needs to make the first step instead of us. We all know what happens when someone makes a thread to discuss/whine/b***h or rant about how rude we are. There is just no way we can convince the forum to be more constructive instead of complaining all the time.

I think that it would be more beneficial if we had an announcement or something from Lanzer (because we all see him as the head of Gaia, even if it's not the case anymore) that mentioned the problems Gaia is going through, apologizes for any heartbreak that it caused and asks us for a second chance. Or something. Something that shows humility and sincerity and gives us all hope for the future of Gaia.
If Gaia could earn more respect from it's users I think that would be a huge step in the right direction to fix this site, to make it less corporate and more friendly and fun and everything it was when I joined 4 years ago. We would be so much more able to provide the necessary feedback to bring this website back to what it once was.

Honestly I feel a bit embarrassed to still post here, even though I still love the site too much to leave. I don't like to tell my friends I use Gaia, because I know that Gaia no longer as enjoyable as it was and should be.
