Welcome to Gaia! ::

I'm not sure where to put this, ut it seems related to the GCD so let's go.

I don't understand the appeal of Gaia marriage, and I'm being bothered about entering into one of my own. Explain and discuss.

Teenagers can be stupid and assume consummating a fake marriage on a forum website actually means something?
I think it seems okay.
I see nothing wrong with it, especially if those two people may be married in real life.

Or maybe they are just bored.
Who knows.

Same reason why Barton exists - some people are just really into roleplay (for innocent and perhaps not-so-innocent reasons). It is weird, but once you get over the entire idea of getting fake-married on a dressup doll site, it doesn't sound like that much different than a more conventional roleplay session.

Of course, if YOU don't want to do it, turn that s**t down! Just because I don't think it's THAT weird doesn't mean that I think you should do it if you're not comfortable with it.

It's not that I'm uncomfortable with it. more that I don't understand the appeal and reasoning behind it.

Let me rephrase that:

If you don't see the point in doing it, then why consider it? Sure, your friends might have hurt feelings, but it's not them...it's that you just don't understand why you want to be Internet-married. lol

The marriages make a little more sense in my mind than the entire families.

I'm not going to pretend to understand the appeal behind it, I can only imagine that it's the same appeal that has people in RL going around saying 'this is my wife'. In that instance it's normally a 'cool' way of saying 'this is my very close friend'.

Or maybe certain individuals just like having someone to go along with the concept of an imaginary relationship.
I guess they make sense in roleplays but I have seen them stretch outside of that area. That's when it becomes less of playing and more of something creepy.

I'm just the opposite. Marriages make less sense to me than the families. But then...I'm an odd duck that takes marriage vows extremely seriously, so I don't understand the appeal of saying them for any reason than the real thing.

I do think you're on to something with the thought that it's a different way of introducing a close friend. You know how tween girls will sometimes claim each other as sisters or even twins when they're not even related at all? Something like that, perhaps.

I do have one person that I will say is my "little brother." But that's almost more of a description of the relationship. Technically, we're only friends, but I act like an older sister to him.
The only way I could see it being not totally pointless is if you were marrying the person in real life also. For instance, if my boyfriend had Gaia (I'm trying. emo ) and after we got married and were bored it would probably be cute to have a gaia wedding considering some of our irl friends also have gaia. <3 Unfortunately, he doesn't have gaia and won't get one. u.u

(in all seriousness, I just want to dress my avatar up elaborately in a fancy wedding costume and then design my bridesmaids costumes...because if I did that s**t I'd do it right!)

The idea of Gaia weddings (or any other website weddings) has always made me think of being in elementary school and having some of the kids make a heart out of straw and performing "weddings" in it. I always thought it was stupid, but it never hurt me, and neither does Gaia weddings, so I just ignore them.

Potential sex.

What? Why does anyone date? To find a mate, to be so not blunt.

Otherwise, what's the point of dating at all?

Gaia dating and Gaia marriage are stupid. I don't understand why people do it either, and personally even if I had friends trying to get me to get Gaia-married, I'd tell them to go do it themselves if they want it so much.

I've seen people going around with "[/username] is my husband/wife!" and I'm here thinking, if you're married IRL and your spouse has an account, then I understand it, but otherwise, no. That said, I do enjoy lurking in the Virtual Hollywood just to watch scantily clad female avatars running around looking for boyfriends, and the drama that results when more than one girl is after the same guy or the guy secretly has another girl he's "dating" at the same time.

Furthermore, dating and marriage on Gaia for "potential sex" is stupid too because sex is against the ToS and you'll get banned anyway (if you're caught at least, and most people aren't really discreet about it, not in Virtual Hollywood at least).

If you have no interest in it, thread creator, then tell your friends (or whoever it is) to stop bugging you about it.
