Gaia being a game!?

Don't you just hate it when people think being in here is a game? Well it isn't it's a flash hang out and others think it's a game because of avatar creation and that it's pixelated. The rally really isn't a game the racing part is but the rest is just hanging out and chatting. The towns and virtual hollywood is just hangout and chat itself also. I don't get why others think this is a game?? The rally is in the games section but that's just because it's the racing part.

Can't say it bothers me that much. I was with a guy that treated making gold as if it were a high score. He rarely spent gold, his whole aim was to just keep making it.

So to him, Gaia was a game.

Eh, let's face it: Gaia's a pretty trivial site. Though there are sections for discussing more serious matter, the truth is that a majority of members don't stay on Gaia for deep, extended discussions- they're here to have fun. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being on a site for that purpose, but since it's primarily a site meant for light amusement, it's easy to see why people assume it's some kind of game- even if there isn't a defined "winner" or "loser" on the site.

I wasn't really nerd raging I'm just pointing out the facts,it just makes me dissapoint that others think that this is a game,even though it's super fun like a game then they can consider it like that but it really isn't.. o.o

Not to be annoying or anything, but seriously, how is Gaia not a game? I mean, games are generally things made for the purpose of having fun. They don't always have defined rules or paths to success, they don't always have winners and losers, and they don't have a single, necessary format. All they really have in common is that they're primarily constructed to have fun- which is Gaia's main purpose. Yes, Gaia happens to have a lot of specific games and forums, but in and of itself I think you can make a pretty convincing argument that it's a game.

It doesn't really bother me when people refer to Gaia as a game, but it does make me either question their understanding of the definition of a game or what they actually know about Gaia.

What pisses me off is when it's referred to as a kid's site. I am 27 years old, so I find it incredibly offensive to be compared to a child, simply because the site also has childish appeal. But, I suppose, people are just judging from the surface.

Well, I don't think the fact that a lot of the activity on Gaia happens in the forums somehow makes it less of a game... the forums are still meant to entertain (even if arguments aren't always fun) so it still feels a bit like Gaia's a game to me.

In my eyes, that doesn't really de-legitimize Gaia or interactions on Gaia, though. It may often be said or meant as an insult, but to my eye there's nothing wrong with an activity that you engage in just for fun. And frankly, Gaia is a hell of a lot better than most of the games or leisure activities out there... it's a lot cheaper and safer than, say, blowing a ton of money at a casino or going out and drinking a lot.

Gaia Online certainly isn't a game, there are plenty of games on the site - and as Wonderfinch pointed out, there are users who are here primarily to play them. I am currently playing Towns in the background while reading posts, collecting the trash and stuff in it to craft stuff in alchemy, in the hopes of selling the result to others to get gold to buy stuff to dress up my avatar. It would be hard to call what I am doing anything but a game, one large convoluted game with different layers and goals.

It is a bit like the difference between a video game and a video game console. Yes, your PS2 is technically not a game per se but it would be hard to claim that making use of it doesn't involve playing games. To people who don't care to make the distinction, they would just call the video game console a game itself.

I think of it more as a 'hangout' then specifically a game. It's a site, WITH games, but other stuff too. I agree that is gets annoying when users refer to it as a game.

Gaia is classified as a social networking, forum, and gaming site. Which is why its blocked by many schools and campus around the world. I don't get mad as I do consider Gaia more of a game than anything hence paper dolls are consider toys and we do all understand this is just forum site with digital paper dolls correct?
