Welcome to Cafe J

The Cafe Itself
Cafe J is a small, relaxed cafe/bar, on a quiet street, near almost anywhere. It's large front windows let in plenty of light during the day, and allow a wonderful opportunity for people watching at night. The main room consists of a number of cozy chairs, arranged in twos and threes around small tables.
Along one wall is a bar, and a doorway leading to a small, though well stocked, kitchen. Behind the bar stands an automatic drink making device. It is always on when Jai isn't in the room, and occasionally is even when he is.* In front of the bar are a number of bar stools, for those customers less interested in being social.
At the far end of the room is a small stage, on which local talent sometimes perform, or karaoke nights are held. There is a small speaker, a microphone and stand, and a stool.**
On the final wall, across from the bar, is a fireplace, with a couch and low coffee table set in front of it. As soon as the weather starts to turn cold, there is always a fire roaring in it, as if by magic. (And perhaps it is.)
(Washrooms are through a door in the kitchen, in case that becomes necessary.)

*If I'm offline, or if I don't respond right away, have the drink-maker make any drinks for you, to keep things moving.
**If I'm online, and you want your character to perform, have them ask first. If I'm not, just make sure no one else is.

Jai
The owner, barista and bartender, Jai has run a number of coffee shops and bars in the past. Over the years, each one has fallen by the wayside, but he keeps returning to the business. He claims it's in his blood, but it's entirely possible he's hiding from something else.
He's almost completely average: he could probably do with losing a few pounds, and maybe he tries to make himself look taller than he is, but he's nothing you'd look twice at. Except when he smiles... there's something off about those teeth.

Jai looks exactly like my avatar, and his name is pronounced like the letter. He's a vampire, but that's only really going to be a thing if you guys want it to be. If you've got a Vampire Hunter character, there might be problems, but otherwise... use that information as you will.

Other Notes
This place doesn't have a set setting - your character could be from the future, the past, an alternate dimension... Whatever. Think of this place as a mixing ground for genres.
Feel free to talk amongst yourselves - I can't be carrying on ten conversations at once!
I operate on Pacific Time, so that'll be what I'm using for my time tags. Feel free to ignore them.
I occasionally tense-shift; I never catch it on time, so sorry if it happens. Just ignore it!
I also occasionally offer free art. If you're a regular here, you might just get some~
Ahhh look what Malky/My Doctor made me !!!
Jai sits at a stool in front of the bar, watching the comings and goings on the street in front of his store.

The front door is open and a nice breeze is coming through the windows. An mp3 player has been hooked up to the sound system, and quiet jazz is wafting through the room.
"Hm." Jai looks around himself and heads behind the bar. He smiles and hums along with the music as he makes himself a cup of tea.
Well, this is pretty much perfect. Just missing a few familiar faces. He smiles to himself at the thought of his partner and of the friends he made at the last cafe they'd run. Fynn had insisted on not working at this one, which Jai understood - it could definitely be a lot of work sometimes. It could also be really wonderfully relaxing.

He settled himself back on his stool, and sipped at his tea - rooibos, no need to caffeine in his system too late in the evening, and watched the club- and party-goers head to the more exciting spots. That was fine. Drama was often over-rated, anyways.
Jai leans back against the counter, singing along to the music under his breath. "Quand le jazz est, quand le jazz est la..."
"Well, at least I brought music this time," the redhead muses to himself. He stands up, setting his tea aside, and snags a broom from just inside the kitchen door. "The least I can do is keep the place looking tidy."

He keeps humming as he starts sweeping the newly opened shop.
Having finished with his sweeping, Jai looks around. Nothing to do... He suddenly snaps his fingers and shakes his head. Damn, he knew he'd forgotten something.

He snags a piece of paper from under the counter, scrawls a 'be right back' on it, and hangs it on the drink-maker. Hopefully, if anyone shows up they'll know to just ask the machine for what they want. It'll make anything quickly and perfectly.

That taken care of, he grabs his coat and steps out into the street, headed for the nearest grocery store.
After a much longer delay than he'd intended, Jai returns to the Cafe, carrying a few grocery bags.

Once again, he starts humming along as he sets about putting all his purchases away - a couple of food items he'd forgot about for the kitchen, some extra milk and so forth for the drinks area, a pile of chocolate bars in a stash near the drink-maker, a new book to read while he waits...

Once those tasks are taken care of he wanders to the back of the room, and picks up the mp3 player lying on top of the speaker, and starts flipping through its contents. There was the jazz playlist, which was currently drifting out - calm, relaxing, but maybe not what his potential clientele were interested in - or he could put on the rock playlist... punk, metal, classical...

He eventually settles on the 'music other people have reccomended to me' playlist and heads back to the bar, to make himself a fresh cup of tea while waiting.
This is certainly much quieter than other cafes he's run.

Jai looks up from his book, and spends a few minutes watching the people walking by outside the window, making up stories for them as they go by.
Jai looks up from his book, glancing at the clock on the wall. He blinks and sits up straight as he realises exactly how much time has past.

Hm, maybe he's not being welcoming enough? Had he put out the welcome mat...?

He glances over towards the door and rolls his eyes at himself. Of course he'd forgotten the welcome mat.
The redheaded barista gets up and grabs something from under the counter. Standing up, and revealing his prize to be (what else?) a welcome mat, he heads over to the door and lays it down, carefully straightening it.

Is the open sign on? He sticks his head outside, just to be sure, and sure enough, it is. Maybe an open door will help... Jai kicks down the stop at the bottom of the door, leaving it open for a nice spring breeze to come in through, and heads back to the counter and to his book.

"Hey gurl, hey~" A rather feminine, yet obviously male voice chimed, as acrylic nails tapped on the glass of the open door.
As soon as he had the barista's attention, the off-duty drag queen stepped into the cafe and placed his heavy bag on the nearest table.
"Where is everyone? Didn't we open an hour ago?" The rather flamboyantly dressed man sashayed over to the counter, arms open for a hug.
Jai beamed and walked quickly over to his favourite drag queen. "Hey there sweetheart!" He hugged his friend tightly and dragged him over to a table. "We opened, like, three days ago, and nothin'." He sighed and shrugged. "Whatcha gonna do? So! Tell me everything you've been up to! It's been a while~"

Paris smiled and hugged back, perhaps a little too tightly. He never knew his own strength.
After sitting down with Jai and crossing his legs, ever the lady, Paris leaned down on the table with his elbows, as though waiting to hear some juicy gossip.
"OMG, I know! So after our last cafe closed, I went back to work at LipStix-- I tried to get a job at Faula's dress shoppe, but apparently Damian works there now that the two of them are back together, ugh, and I've avoided that place like an STD ever since-- ANYWHO! So I went back to LipStix, got my old job back, got some new wigs and learned a lot of new tricks, and I've actually made enough money to buy a car. Granted I still sleep on people's couches, but at least now I have a way of getting around." He explained dramatically.
"What about you, hun? What have you and Fynn been up to?" He looked around for the other vampire, but didn't see him. "You're still together... right?" He couldn't imagine them being apart.
Jai laughed and settled himself down in the chair across the table. "Sounds like you've been having fun~" He grinned and ran a hand through his hair. "Well, obviously I've had a haircut. Fynn and I are still together, of course, though he decided he'd rather not get himself dirty running another place - to each his own, I suppose~" He shrugged, expression making it clear that he couldn't imagine a more relaxing life than this one. "We've mostly been getting bored - the last shop brought in enough money that we haven't needed to worry about working, but now... I'm bored, and I like this work." He beamed. "So! Here I am!" He went to pick up his tea cup and realised it wasn't in front of him.

"Can I get you anything to drink, or eat?"
