(Noms on pudding) Ok, I shall tell you. smile

Fullmetal Alchemist (Usually cited as being the original, but in my opinion far from it) was started about the same time as the manga. However the manga took longer to produce, so the people in charge of the show made up a story line separate from the manga's to finish the series.

Fullmetal Alchimist Brotherhood was started when the manga was about finished, so they made another anime to reflect what the manga was about almost verbatim. (I once read the manga while watching one of the episodes. I think the translation varied in only three spots. xD)

Aside from that, there are a few other small differences, like the art style is a bit more dark and realistic in Brotherhood.

I've just started watching Brotherhood. I've already noticed subtle differences, but so far I like the first better. Actually at the moment the first one is my all-time favorite anime.

The first one is more character-driven and is paced better.

Brotherhood follows the manga more closely.

as requested (as I understand it) by the creator of the series.

the first one...wow it's been so long since i watched it. i would say it was more about them finding some whore named dante to kill all the homonculous (mostly envy) but fma brotherhood follows closely to the manga and to be honest made a lot more sense. it was really about them getting their bodies back that was the goal the entire time. they would not shut up about it lol. and i think there was another revelution of the ishbalians to find equality and peace for once.

Spoiler

i would say it was more about them finding some whore named dante to kill all the homonculous (mostly envy) Dante replaced father as the big bad and creator of the homoculus. envy being the result of trying to bring back their son

She consulted with the writers on the original series about how they were going to move forward with the series past where she was in the manga. She talks about this in the some of the English version volumes.
I like the first series because it has comedy. Brotherhood has some comedy thrown in but it's mostly action and plot-related stuff.
brotherhood is based on the manga while fullmetal is an oruiginal story.
im pretty sure
