Well, let's wing it while it lasts.
And come to think of it, I'd rather talk of prose.
A-HA, EXACTLY!
Seriously, I was having this exact conversation with Kjralon earlier. Prose DOES tend to warrant discussion, because it contains story and story resonates on a much more common denominator. Poetry is, at its core, sheer language carved to razor point, without the burdens of story getting in its way. Admirable, sure - but not for everyone. Not for most people. Especially in a casual sense. People can write poetry casually, that's what I do, but don't expect them to dive into it with the fervor of a really good pulp paperback.
Well, you see:
Prose is actually my main interest. I'd like to see writing in general being discussed, but dreamers aren't wishers. Poetry interests me though, because of its arrangement of imagery, literary devices and format. I don't see how that couldn't be just as interesting as prose. With prose, stories are being discussed, and I can see how poetry appears to be quite dull in contrast. But really, it all depends on the mastery one has on such skills. Though I have to admit that poetry can become a stale topic real fast.
The problem is one of skill, like you said. It's possible to put together solid stories using mediocre language (not just in terms of vocabulary, obviously), but poetry's the sort of thing you'd associate with gnarled hands and a jeweler's eyeglass. Hardcore stuff. It's somewhat inclusive appeal could also explain its low commercial value, as well. =P
The meat in poetry's in writing it and tightening it up, not talking about it. Which, really, is just another clue as to how flimsy this topic's foundation really is.
