A long time ago, a fatal bird named Chromaggia met with an arrow of an archer while flying. For years, he traveled along the lava-made coasts, over both land and water, over cities and villages, escaping the arrow. But what the bird did not realize was that the arrow was attached to his leg; it was tied to him.

Townspeople from below would cry out, "Chromaggia, Chromaggia, why don't you face the danger? Only you can end this!"

But Chromaggia took no notice of their pleas and did not understand them. He kept flying, trying to shake off the arrow. And so he pulled the arrow along, and it wounded the people. Their innocent blood was shed. For a very long time, he was blind to his own doing, too preoccupied with his escape to notice, until one day he slowed down enough to hear their painful cries. It was as if a blindfold was removed from his eyes.

"Ah! By pulling this arrow, others have been wounded because of me!" He was so distraught over his realization that he immediately decided to end it all. "Down! Down towards the devil's mouth I shall go, where I belong!" He plunged himself into the fiery depths of a volcano and was swallowed up in magma, arrow and all.

Ah, but it was about more than just sparing the people from further harm...it was also a punishment.
I like my story version of it. =w=
But all of this is implied in the original lyrics, I believe.
