Don't die, dear thread! This is interesting. twisted
Minari
I can help it. Please, try, what makes the books so appealing? Just saying they are is a pretty weak argument.

I think I actually understand why some people like them. Two beautiful characters (one sort of disguised in a way that allows many people to relate to her) Who fall in love.

In fact, I think story is a bit of wish fulfillment for the demographic. I know this, because I'm a teen age girl. The idea of having a romance with a gorgeous extraordinary guy, appeals to us (Well not me...).

Anyway, I didn't like it, but I can see why many of my peers do.

Oh, and Minari, I LURVES Terry Pratchette. heart
I know, I've had that particular conversation before (see the recent pages of the official Twilight thread), but I wanted to get her to think about the books wink

OmigoshPratchettfan! I knew you had good taste, but damn.

...And! On topic.... I wish Bella would trip and land on a knife alreadyXP

EDIT: Better yet! I wish she would trip and accidentially stab Ed in the heart with her pencil twisted

lol, but that wouldn't kill him! Remember, they can only die if their torn into a bazillion pieces and BURNED!

Anyway, yeah, I'm still reading the book, and she just passed out in the dance studio... OH NOES! But i bet Eddie will save her. heart

Yes Pratchette is the bestest ever! But we shouldn't keep talking about him... Is Twilight tread after all...

Ohright. I forget that the entire concept of the SPECIES was Mary-sue stare I can only stomach about a chapter at a time... it just gnaws at my brains.

Hey, Pterry makes threads better, not worse wink However, if you feel you need justification, we could always compare....
Morphine for Mannequins
I, unfourtunetly, have read this book.
It's terrible. But alot of my friends are obsessed.
The writer is a good writer, it's just the idea that sucks, pretty much.

I'm not even sure of her quality of prose is all that great. I mean, it's engaging, but she doesn't know what the hell she's doing with it.
And wouldn't know character development if it punched her in the face.

EDIT: Not that I'm suggesting anything.
Minari
It's not romance because there's no connection. There're no trials (with personalities stare ), no conflict, no development. Just two bits of cardboard who suddenly decide that they can't live without eachother.

There is a conflict. It just appears much later. You have this very long introduction of the characters, and they develop. After that, you get this sense of who everyone is, so the world is slowly expanding with support characters and the like. You then find out the conflict, which is James, Victoria and them. Edward realizes that because he is around Bella, other vampires are after her blood. Much like what Edward said, Bella is like a drug to him.

Sure, the characters are a bit perfect... but only from Bella's POV. If you read the first chapter of Midnight Sun, you get a completely different view of Edward. Don't just judge him on what you read so far. By reading it from a different POV, you get a better feel for his character.
Yeah, but, see, it's all outside influence. They have no problems with eachother, only with the things their relationship causes, therefore it isn't a relationship. Did that make any sense?

And I'l say it one more time: it is the author's duty to relay things to her readers, regardless of viewpoint. If her characters have flaws she needs to get them across to us, even if she doesn't get them across to Bella. An example would be Bartimaeus, the incredibly arrogant star of the trilogy by the same name. He doesn't think he's arrogant, but the author clearly shows us he is in the other characters' responses and in the trouble he gets himself into. One way or another, Ms. Meyer should be able to convey Edwards flaws, even if Bella doesn't see them.
Have you read the first chapter of Midnight Sun? The flaws that Edward has are all in his thoughts. Mind you, this book isn't published yet, but these are flaws that Bella wouldn't see. She can't read his thoughts, thus she wouldn't know what he's thinking.

...Outside influence is a conflict. It's called External Conflict. But at one point, you do see that Edward has a problem with Bella. He hates the fact that she is so stubborn. He can't stand that she wants to be like him, in which he hates himself, this gives us Internal Conflict.

I did admit earlier that there are somethings I would change if I had written Twilight, but she's the one that wrote it. Not me. Personally, I would have killed at least someone off... It's just that, since this is a series, you can't kill off a main character like Bella or Edward.

You people annoy me so much with your "everyone loves it so i have to hate it" attitudes.

No, no. It's the "Everyone who loves it is so damn obnoxious about it and I ******** hate that," attitude.

I get the "be your own person" thing and don't follow the crowd, but come on! books arn't clothing!
You're not fooling anyone. Everyone is conformist to one degree or another in every single human society. It is unavoidable.
Quote:
maybe people are reading the books that are popular because maybe they arnt that bad!
Or it could equally be that teens often enjoy mindless tripe.

Quote:
twilight is not cliche, the vampires are nothing like traditional vampires and no they are not effen perfect, Bella is a normal human being who happens to be in love with a very handsom guy.
So, you've never read ANYTHING by Anne Rice, I take it?

Quote:
so what if he is very hot? if he was fugly then it would still be cliche. hello beauty and the beast!? JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING IS EFFEN CLICHE!!!
Did you NOT just say that Twilight wasn't cliche? Are you contradicting yourself for the irony factor, or are you just dumb?

Quote:
Would you rather read a book that is full of people killing other people and a world full of hate? if u want that watch the news, i like reading about a world that is full of love.
I have, and did. 1984 is certainly more poignant and entertaining. Also - you may want to try to accept the fact that the world is not, and was never full of love.

Quote:
and yes i will agree with that one person who mentioned that she went to jacob, it was a stupid thing for her to do, but hey more proof that she is not perfect.
You can still be perfect and 'dumb,' in a book, so long as the author justifies the stupidity.
Quote:
I'd probably do the same thing if my bf broke up with me and my friends hated me.
From what I understand, many fans who read that part said Bella was being a whiny and selfish ********.

Quote:
write a book that is good, not cliche, and one that everyone does not fan over then i will personally congradulate you.
I will ever write a book for your kudos.
No, I haven't, but if he's a main character then we can't afford to wait until his version to understand his motives. She has to show us.

I wasn't saying that it, wasn't sorry! But it doesn't... oh, how do I say this? In the Discworld books, my favorite pair is Carrot and Angua. I can't wait till they get married and have lots of children that I can "squee" over. But it isn't all good all the time and the problems they have are with eachother. Angua gets upset that Carrot loves her, sure, but he loves everyone. She feels neglected. Carrot doesn't appear to have any major problems with her (he repremands her for being closed-minded sometimes), but he doesn't have any problems with anyone. It drives both the reader and Angua up the wall that he doesn't often treat her very special at all. She wants him to b***h a little bit now and again, because it would be something.

I haven't gotten to the point where Ed gets annoyed with Bella, but it's about damn time, seeing as I'm 300 pages in. There need to have been internal problems by now and there haven't. Simply put, it's a bad basis for a relationship.
I'll reply to your post later... It's late and I need sleep. Ja~!
