I'm still trying to decide what aspect of network administration I really like and want to primarily focus on, but I'm eight weeks in. They say as we get further into the course our preferences will become clear and we'll probably be picking specialties which will guide our career choices.

We're studying Linux and Unix this week and have already discussed the "shellshock" fiasco.

I wish I knew what all that stuff was so I could give you a proper response, but since I don't, you'll have to take the thought of me nodding in confusion.

It's refreshing to hear you're willing to suffer so much for your passion, I lack that sort of bravery.

Well shellshock is a Linux/Unix exploit (and MacOS is Unix folks!), which can totally allow users to take control of a Linux/Unix system. This just recently came to light a few days ago. Macs suddenly aren't invulnerable to attacks anymore folks!

Oh, and also, 2/3rds of the world's servers, particularly ones that are "cloud" or "email" servers run Linux. Google's servers are ALL Linux so this is serious business for them.

Well not necessarily. They could always find a solution to the exploit. The question just becomes if they will before it becomes an issue.

And I should have pointed out that Linux/Unix is just another operating system that runs computers and servers much like Windows, so think of it like getting a virus or worm on your Windows-based laptop or desktop. 3nodding

I'm rocking the mickey mouse right now, I have an old one from high school with holes in the sleeves and a couple ultra-thin ones that I use as undershirts sometimes razz

Cali is wonderful, I used to live in Norcal. The coast up there is so cold and quiet this time of year, it's dread-inspiring and somehow romantic.
