...is based off of a specific event in medieval Europe?

See, in the 1300's the Knights Templar was an international organization, more influential and connected than most the kingdoms at the time, and the knights had stronger loyalty to each other then any of the kings at the time. This peeved off a certain king (I think he was French) who then decided to kill the knights and be done with them, but their communication was so good that if he killed off one group of Templars, the others would find out quicker than he could get to them and go into hiding. So the king organized his soldiers to kill off several Knights Templar groups all on a single night, Friday the Thirteenth.

Interestingly enough, Friday the Thirteenth is a bigger thing in America than in Europe.
