I keep seeing people make this claim that Disney ruined the "original" Grimm's version of Cinderella by making it too nice. This bothers me because:
1. The Grimm's version isn't even the original. Charles Perrault wrote a version that predates theirs, published in 1697. The Grimm's fairy tales weren't published until 1812.
2. Disney's Cinderella is based on the Perrault tale. If you don't believe me, perhaps wikipedia can convince you, or you can read the tale yourself. The Perrault version is very child-friendly to start with. It includes a fairy godmother who gives Cinderella a dress and transforms a pumpkin into a coach and mice into horses. It does not include anyone mutilating their feet to fit in the shoe.
Disney didn't alter the tale to make it nice, and I'm sick of hearing people say so. The original version was that way to start with.
Rant over.
Possibilities for discussion: Cinderella, Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, Disney, various versions of fairy tales.
