Due to an over-abundance of this question over the last few months, I'm creating a thread for the specific purpose of discussing personal favorites.
If any new threads are created on the subject, they will be locked.
For that matter, I'll be locking the current ones as well.
Please try to keep spoilers to a minimum.

So say what you will.
Which Final Fantasy is your favorite?
Why do you like it so much?
When did it Become your favorite?
Was it always your favorite, or did it displace another?

Okay first off I'm not saying FFVIII is the best. It's my favorite but i've a feeling when i do get around to playing VI and beating it that'll be right there next to VIII.

The Guardian Forces!
Without their abilities to go through the game would be a constant terrifying heart pounding battle. They start out powerful, but with SumMag +10,20, and 30% with boost you can knock out a good chunk of anyone's health. Not to mention the summoning sequence for Diablos is awesome visually.
Revive - Phoenix down for free
Recover - Curaga for free
Treatment - Remedy for free
etc etc etc

The Junction System
If you are smart Selphie at starting lvl can have over 5k hp.
Some may argue well that doesn't help nearly as much since your VIT determines how easily you are damaged. Well with the Junction System Selphie at starting lvl can have up to 200 VIT out of 255 possible points.

When I hit the enemy I add my STR Junction, my Elemental Junction, my Status Effect Junction that enemy is now pretty dead.

The Limit Breaks
LionHeart 99999 times 12 hits is... a lot of numbers
Degenerator creates a black hole that sucks the baddies into it
Armageddon Punch with the right junctions and 12 seconds you can put about 36 attacks into
the baddie
The End Calls down 4 angels to fly any enemy including Ultima Weapon into a flowery Field
Angelo Search finds rare and never before seen items.
Angel Wing casts magic at X5 the normal Damage.
Pulse Ammo kinda like what would happen if the gamma rays of a near by supernova hits Earth

Story, can't say much with out killing the game for those that haven't played.

Music.... well nvm

I think 2002 is when it became my fav.

It didn't replace anything, first turn based RPG and first FF game.
lots of wordz

Mine would have to be Final Fantasy V. I consider it the best game in the series in terms of gameplay, and it challenged me to improving my habits in JRPG playing as a whole.

I like it so much because the Class Change System allows for a certain degree of flexibility depending on what you need done at any moment of the game, and skill equipping allows the use of abilities from other jobs so you can maintain a semblance of what you need to have during storyline advancement, grinding, skill learning, or just stealing rare items from enemies.

Sure, it doesn't have any of the fancy stuff from the later FFs, but the right kind of job mixes and skill equips can potentially make any of the characters a force to be reckoned with. I especially like the fact that when you master a job class, the passive abilities will automatically be inherited by the character's initial class (Bare, Normal, Suppin, whatever it's called in the different versions) without having to equip them.

It became my favorite when I first played it on the PS1, and my interest for it was revived when I got to play the GBA version with all the add-ons and everything. It's the only game that I have an official JP guide book of (and I can read it, too.). The storyline isn't so hot, but then again, this was one of the FFs created during the trend that the even-numbered games focused on story, while odd-numbered ones were all about gameplay and character development. Given the choice between the two, I'd pick the latter.

It superimposed my love for FF6, since I'd rather do job changes to suit the character I like than have to deal with one I don't like just because he/she's a permanent fixture in the game proper.

YOU WANT ME TO DO WHAT!!! WITH WHAT!!! AND PUT IT WHERE!!!

FFX has to be my favorite, I think it has the most uniqe storyline and characters and it became my favorite the moment I started playing. It did not replace any other game, it was my first Final Fantasy and my first actual game really.

I love FFVII, it has a great plot. It has to be my favorite, followed by FFXII, FFVIII and FFIX.

FF7 is my all time favorite. Always has been, always will be. It has a legacy :3

Because...This Is Me... :3
FFIX is definitely my favorite. I liked the characters the most out of the other FF's I played and I felt the "romance" between Zidane and Garnet felt natural and fun. I also had major personal things in life going on at the time so there's more of a sentimental attachment to the game too because of that.

I LOVED Chocobo hot&cold!

I have to say that my favorite FF game is the MMORPG FFXI!! Love the game play and seems that you can play for years on end and STILL not do everything there is to do in it. Have been playin for around 8 months and only have ONE 75 char....Can't wait to get back into it.
