Welcome to Gaia! ::

Friendly Bookworm

I've never had much of a problem with the newer games, my only little spat being that we all probably spent over $100 on XIII-2 thanks to 1.) Collector's Edition and 2.) Getting all the DLC.

Kinda miss the days when hard worked unlocked the good stuff.

But, do note, everyone is entitled to an opinion. It's up to them to change it when they want to. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Yes, VII may be my favorite but at least I can sit here and say "I don't want a remake" because I did a lot of homework, listened to what Square Enix said, and made my choice there. So I want to change anyone else's opinion, no. I simply do express it to let people know how I feel about it, and maybe just a little bit can hit them somewhere.

XI
Second, the game itself suffers as a result of its online only gameplay. The story cannot be told as well as normal and the gameplay results in lengthy grind sessions and levelling that takes too long.

Honestly, considering the MMOs that are out there right now, I think XI did it probably the best. I mean, you can revisit older cutscenes and the game keeps track of your progress.

I consider it along the lines of, taking a break between one boss and anothe to grind out your level, like in any other RPG. Except in this one it's FAR more grandiose. Haha.

I never played any other MMO which could tell a story at the style FFXI did theirs.

What do you mean you can revisit older cutscenes? I don't remember that.

And my point isn't how well it tells a story for an MMO. My point is how well it tells a story for a Final Fantasy game.

There are the little "???" when you walk into areas and when you click on them, it asks if you want to replay the cutscene.

Hm. Interesting. I'll have to look out for that the next time I play.

X-2: Awesome gameplay. Story is meh, but that's okay because there is a ton of sidequest s**t to do. I personally like the more up-beat feel and love the references to pop-culture of the 60s & 70s.

XII: I never finished this one. I love the setting and the characters. Beautiful graphics and so on, lots of sidequests and exploration. The Gambit system is pretty neat. I do not like how limited the license grid is, or how everyone basically ends up having all the same skills, or the fact that you cannot directly control the summons.

XIII: I really, really like this one a lot. Good story, if somewhat melodramatic. Good characters, especially Hope. Fun, fast-paced battle system, gorgeous cutscenes. Summoning is the most fun it has ever been. The only downside is that there's very little to it, but what's actually there is fantastic.

XIII-2: Terrible, terrible, terrible. The potential of time travel as a plot point and gameplay mechanic is wasted on Serah and Noel, who are the two dullest dipshits to walk the surface of Pulse, and Mog is so ******** annoying that I want to punt the little turd into outer space. Monster Capture is a poorly implemented mechanic that does not make up for a severe lack of interesting characters.

The Casino and Chocobo Racing are fun, but serve no purpose because there are no worthwhile prizes, except the ones you're basically forced to get for story reasons. The DLC is shockingly disappointing, comprised mostly of cosmetic bullshit that adds nothing to the story. It's pointless to buy Coliseum opponents because you won't be able to beat them until you've basically completed the story anyway, and levelling them up requires hours and hours of shitty grinding for rare material.

This game has two saving graces: Hope, who is a suitably badass scientist, and the ending.

Rainbow Harvester

I will never understand all of the hate that XII and XIII get.

one of the complaints I hear the most regarding XII is that players didn't like Vaan as the "main character," but I think players really have to realize that just because he's the character you control in the towns does not make him the main character. Basch and Ashe were really the main characters in all of this; Vaan is just there to give the player an outsider's perspective on the whole situation. I love this game, though. definitely one of my favorite Final Fantasies. the characters, setting, and plot are all very well done, and I love having so much to explore.

as for XIII, I like this one a lot too. I will admit that it's linear, but the plot and characters more than make up for it. this was the first Final Fantasy where I genuinely liked and cared about all of the characters. heck, I even emotionally connected with Sazh, who was supposed to be the comic relief character (turns out, he's actually my favorite!). and I loved watching Hope and Lightning grow and develop throughout the game. and I adore the battle system. it's so much fun to play with Paradigm setups, especially later in the game against the harder enemies.

and let me just address the people who complain about the lack of town exploration: it wouldn't have made any sense given the plot. the characters are wanted fugitives, feared and hated by pretty much everyone on Cocoon. they couldn't just go waltzing into a town without starting a huge panic.

I can kind of see where haters of X-2 and XIII-2 are coming from. X-2 didn't have the best writing, especially compared to X, but I thought it was fun anyway. XIII-2's storyline was really... odd, but creating a plot involving time travel and having it make sense is an extremely difficult task. I just hope everything gets cleared up with a third game.

XIII-2's story is pathetic, defies everything set up by XIII and retcons it for no good reason, has an awful ending, all as a result of a single plot device added as an excuse for the stupid downer ending that doesn't even make sense, The characters repeat the same thing over and over and over, the maps are still as linear as ever, the graphics are actually worse, none of the characters are likeable or interesting, the interesting and important parts of the plot go neglected, completion of the game adds nothing to the game at all, the ally AI is stupider then the ones in XIII, I could go on and on about why XIII-2 is a horrendous disappointment, especially as a sequel.

This sounds more like a rant from someone who hasnt played them game themselves and is just repeateding what they've read or heard others say.

Personally, I LOVED XIII and XIII-2. The characters are very well done, especially Sazh and Fang. Snow is a bit too gung-ho for me, but thats who he is. The graphics are amazing. Go to the Archilyte Steppe in XIII and just look around. Up in the sky, across the plains, etc. Simply breathtaking. Look at Atlas over the horizon. Gaze upon Cocoon up in the sky. Watch the Behemoth prowl after his prey. Amazing.

XIII-2 uses the same graphics engine and its wonderful to see how the locations changed after XIII throughout the timeline.

You mean besides the fact I've beaten both XIII and XIII-2 to the point of having almost all achievements, full crystarium and all fragments?

Stop being an ignorant p***k, assuming people who disliked the game are all ******** morons who can't think for themselves. Gaia desperately needs a dislike button.

Not my business, but that first sentence was pretty gnarly to say. Just sayin.
How "new" are we talking here? FFX came out 10 years ago. .....Holy s**t I feel old.

X-2 was just fun. Put away your pretentious FF character moodiness, your 2deep4u plots, your emotions, ******** it all. Let's play a game where j-pop idols bathe together in hot springs and tease each other about boys, steal 1000 year old artifacts for shits and giggles, have gravity-defying concerts with lasers and robot drummers, and fly around on the sexiest thing to ever achieve mach speed.

Why? Because it's fun. I love FFX-2 for going in the exact opposite direction that most every other FF game is known for: the bleak, moody characters, the hopeless fight against the insurmountable force, the depressing worlds, FFX-2 just sticks its middle finger to the formula and does its own thing, like a 6 year old ballerina who went on stage while the senior hip-hop class was performing at the community dance show. And I love it.

I loved FFXII because the dialogue. My God the dialogue and story pacing was phenomenal in this game. The words were often timed, like a Shakespearean script (especially Balthier's lines, pay attention!)

I also love how it was self-aware that Vaan and Penelo were forgettable, annoying brats and almost completely cut them out of the script once the whole party was assembled, making way for Princess "8/10, Would Bang" Ashe, Basch "Grizzled ********" von Ronsenburg, "Jack Sparrow" Balthier the Sky Pirate, and Fran "DAT a**" the Viera.
X-2: Best battle system in the entire series. Yes, it can be a bit obnoxious at times and some of the retcons are frustrating, but it's still one of my personal favorites.

XII: Horrible combat system, awesome plot and characters (except for Vaan, of course). Gets way too much hate, IMO.

XIII: Mediocre as hell for the first 10 hours, but it gets progressively better. I really dug the combat system.

XIII-2: Just finished it last night. Loved the chemistry between Serah and Noel, had a lot of fun with its non-linearity, and even got a tad misty-eyed at the end.

Youkai Moe's Waifu

Cat

The only thing that bothered me about X-2 was that the tragic ending was fixed.
Still, my headcanon is that the perfect ending was all a dream, so meh.

13 isn't as bad as everyone says it is.
The gameplay can be a bit annoying sometimes, but that's more because it's hair-pullingly hard than "just press X."
The characters were wonderful; the people who call the cast "unlikable" have a thing or two to learn about a magical thing called "character development."

I didn't like 12, though, but that's just my opinion.

I hope they get rid of the party leader bullshit.
