How do long-time fans of Final Fantasy like FFXIII and XIII-2? What did you even like about FF that makes you like XIII and XIII-2

Just a thought, but perhaps a majority of them started in the late generation and saw that as what final fantasy should be.

Kind of like how i started on games like 7-10, and why i like them more than the others. XII was pretty good too, but it was lacking in something...

Yeah, but The GDs Ianto Jones guy seems to be a long-time fan (or at least he makes it seem so), and he said XIII and XIII-2 both are in his top 5. I really want to know what he even liked about FF to begin with if he was a long time fan and actually enjoyed XIII and XIII-2.

I mean, I started with VII, so I liked character design and story when I first got into Final Fantasy, both of which are mediocre at best in FFXIII/XIII-2. Not to mention exploration and the surrounding universe as a whole, which are all pretty much the worst in the XIII games.

Bingo. That's one of XIII's biggest problems. LACK of exploration. It's just pretty to look at.

I wonder if it would have as many fans if it were released in a world where graphics don't mean a damn thing. It would probably fail miserably. I've been nice and listened to everyone's opinions, but some people have really made me lose hope for the gaming community of today. I never realized until now how shallow some fans can really be.

Just makes me sad that a decent amount of regulars of this forum think VERY highly of the games. Dunno if this has always been normal, since I haven't really been active in this subforum until like a week ago.

Granted they aren't horrible. I didn't like them because I feel like they are missing SOMETHING that the other games had. Not sure if it's because of lack of story, character development, fun, or Nabuo..

I just feel like what you see is what you get with them. Pretty graphics, but nothing underneath. I can't be the only person who feels this way.

Metacritic USER score of XIII-2: 7.1 (PS3), 6.0 (360)

Yeah, you're definitely not the only person. Even not just looking at user scores like that, but I'm pretty sure there are A LOT of long-time FF fans that think the same.

It all comes down to opinion. It doesn't matter if you can't understand why, that's just how it is.
I came into the FF fandom kinda late. My first was X-2, and I think XII came out two or three years thereafter. X-2 was my favourite before XII took it's place. I liked XIII for it's characters, but it's below both of those in terms or how much I liked it.
Ultimately, when I play a game, I want the game mechanics/battle system to be fun. To me, if those things aren't any good, I might as well watch a movie. Graphics and storyline are last on my list when it comes to how much I enjoy a game.
That's why VII and VIII are lowest on my list. I find their battle systems to be slow and boring, and I can't stress how much I despise random encounters. They have good stories and some good characters, but unless they're as amazing as XII was, it doesn't effect my feelings much.

To be honest, I don't like XII's battle system that much. I can't even go a single playthrough without stopping for weeks or months at some point along the game. But I enjoyed the characters immensely, and it had the most memorable dialog scenes of any FF I've played. Those things along blew away any qualms I might've had with the gameplay.

I'm pretty certain once Versus comes out, it will become my new favourite. Once I heard it was going to have a battle system like KH, it was like love at first sight. KH uses my favourite type of battle system (at least the first one did). Battles are fast-paced, enemies appear on the same screen, and while there was a lot of button mashing, unlike it's sequals, you also had to make good use of guarding and other enemies required some kind of strategy. KH also has some platform jumping (another favourite genre of mine), and there was always something to explore.
I don't know if Versus will incorporate either of those last two, but the battle system alone has me excited for it's release. ( :
If it also happens to have good characters, plot, and graphics. Well, that's just a bonus.

Exactly, opinions. Which is where most ff fans seem to have the most problem coming to an agreement. I will say, I have seen quite a few shallow ffxiii fans though :l
i remember asking one what they liked about it and all they could say was how awesome the graphics and battle system were. That's great... but i think every element is equally as important. There's a certain balance in games that should be achieved, in my opinion.

Well, my statements were still mainly focused towards the long-time FF fans. If someone's been a fan since before the 2000s, then they wouldn't like it for the battle system, because it was just a traditional RPG in that sense during that time. So you wouldn't be considered a long-time FF fan, if you consider storyline to be secondary to gameplay in your FF games. Having good characters and plot aren't "just a bonus" for people that liked FF back then, because that was almost all there was to like about the games. Even then, you don't consider FFXIII your favorite, which a lot of regulars seem to do, so you're still not really a part of the people that I have a problem with.

            You make a point there.
I still felt like it was directed at me, though. Even if it isn't my most favourite, I still appreciate what they did by using linearity and forced battle parties as part of the story. Even though it wasn't received well, they tried to put art into it. I also thought the characters were some of the most well-developed I'd ever seen in an FF. Characters I disliked in the beginning, I loved by the end.
It's not like I ignore plot and graphics completely. But I can play games with the most horrible plots known to man as long as the gameplay is fun. I guess that's what I was trying to say. >.<
