First off, I'm not trying to trash either one of these series. I love Final Fantasy, and FFVI, is one of my favorite games, nd I'm a huge Star Wars nerd. However, I was replaying FFVI recently, and I noticed quite a few similarities to Star Wars. I shall list some of them here:

- FFVI was the first game to introduce ther character names "Biggs" and "Wedge," which are the names of two characters in Star Wars.

- The name "Locke" sounds similar to "Luke."

- The Atma Weapon looks like a light saber.

- The Empire, and a rebel group, the Returners

- The Empire's soldiers resemble Storm Troopers

- Cute fuzzy critters that kick evil's butt (Moogles, Ewoks)

- Big, powerful apelike creature (Chewy, Umaro)

- Dude with a flying machine (Han Solo, Setzer)

- Magic is portrayed in a similar fashion to The Force

I'm sure you can think of others. Do you think the developers of this game had Star Wars in mind when they were working? Discuss.

Well first off Since Final Fantasy Started there have been references to Star Wars in it. FFVI was not the first and this is just as bad as people claiming that FFXII is a clone of star Wars.

Locke sounds nothing like Luke, Most people pronounce it Lock, I think however that they meant to pronounce him Locke as in the "e" isn't silent a mixture of "Lock" to add to the fact he is a Thief and the "e" to sound mischievous like "Loki" the demigod of mischief.

The Atma weapon also draws power off your HP! That must be a direct reference to star wars of course! the lightsaber is always more powerful with more force![/sarcasm]

They are sprites and how do they resemble storm troopers? Storm Troopers are clones and dress in white while they are citizens that dress in brown

Moogles= ewoks now? oh yes lets say compare them to Ewoks despite that they appeared in FF3 and after.

If Umaro was Chewbaca that would make Mog Han Solo, not Setzer since he is his partner and he appeared relatively late to be chewy plus had no real purpose and was less intelligent.

Yes, lets despite the fact that a Airship has appeared in every single Final Fantasy and the first one to own a airship was Cid in Final Fantasy 2.

Magic is always portrayed as a similar way to the force in all video games, and this is far from anything like the force, first magic can't be used by humans without being touched by the espers, which makes no sense if it was the force because the force can be used by all creatures no matter how much they have in them.

For a Star Wars Fan you don't sem to have much of a case.

There is no one that does not carry scars on their heart, If there was such a person he would be a shallow soul.
Not to mention, it is no secret that Square has a HUGE love for Star Wars, in FFIX, Necron recited a whole speech from Star Wars before you fight him, to name another esample, FFVI was deffinatly not the first, not to mention, if you ever played Chrono Trigger there is a tent where you can play, if memory serves me, a game like the ball and cup game where you pick, after the three characters mix themselves up, which is the right guy. There is a character there, besides Wedge and Biggs? Called 'Pete', that guy is also taken from Star Wars, he is a captain or Luteniant or something ranking from the Star Wars movies, so it isnt exactly like Final Fantasy was the only one who got this Star Wars love placed into it by Square.

The people at Square Enix are BIG fans of Star Wars, and liked to incorperate that into Final Fantasy.

Although... FFVIII was the most famous for all the names from Star Wars being put into that game.

So yes, always keep an eye out for those silly references. wink

Yes, there are the occasional Star Wars references (Biggs and Wedge, Celes telling Locke he's short for a soldier, etc.). But just because there's rebels fighting an evil empire, ape men, armored soldiers, or giant flying ships doesn't make a story a Star Wars ripoff (or "spoof" as you put it). George Lucas did not come up with those concepts.

I think you're thinking of Piet from VIII. He's named after Admiral Piett from Episodes V and VI. VIII also had a guy named Nida (possibly named after Captain Needa from Episode V) and the Galbadian Garden headmaster, Martine, was apparently named Dodonna in the Japanese version (after the Rebel General from Episode IV).

Final Fantasy XII is probably closer to Star Wars.

I mean, the direction of the cutscenes, and the music used, instantly makes me think of it, as well as the overall story of defeating the evil empire.

Not to mention:

Vaan - Luke Skywalker

Balthier - Han Solo (undeniable)

Fran - Chewbacca

Ashe - Princess Leia

As well as the Judges, most of whom seeming very similar to Darth Vader.

Nope, im talking about Chrono Trigger...

In The Tent of Horrors or whatever it is you can play three ames, one is picking a soldier, one of the soilders is named Piette, the others are Vicks and Wedge, the names obviously a take off from Star Wars as you and I said.

The one in FFVIII was, obviously, made later and thus his name would of been taken from Star Wars/CT.

Oh, jeez. I should not stare at a bright monitor and try to read things on the internet right after I wake up. I completely missed the Chrono Trigger part. x_____X

I agree with you with Balthier being like Han Solo, and hey, he even shows up with who you compared Fran too! xD

... How?

Luke Skywalker actually had a point to the movie. He wasn't just following Han Solo around just to tag-along.

Fran actually has some insight on the journey, basically being the wise-a** of the group. She knows everything, is always serious. The only connection being... shes a different species. Not the best of connections.

I know, but Vaan is technically main character, and he has a personality similar to Luke, as well as vaguely similar appearance. Edit: Not to mention, he grew up in a desert area, and had his family killed by the big bad Empire.

And Fran... OK, the only reason I mention Fran is because it works with Balthier being Han Solo.

He's a guy who is proud of his ship, has an arrogant and cynical personality (but is good hearted overall), owes money to a weird green creature, and travels with a companion who is of a different species. Yeah.

I'm not arguing that Han Solo has similarities to Bathlier, I'm just saying... that's ALL the similarities there are.. well aside from what little Ashe had to Leia.

Star Wars references are EVERYWHERE. Inescapable. FFVI is still unique and a great game.

Edit: Plus, you forgot that when you walk in to save Celes while still wearing the uniform, she says the same thing Leia said to Luke, or something similar. "Aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper?" is what she says in the movie.

I'm bored with my avi. Dx

Just if you're wondering why it changes ten times a day again.

But there so many parellels, I wish I could remember them all.

For example, the part where you rescue Ashe in the Leviathan is practically identical to the Death Star scenes.

Oh, oh, and the Urutan-Yensa in the Sandsea and the Sandpeople of Star Wars. I mean, what's the god damn difference.

Uhh. Lots of games have deserts that house angry people! Even real life! It's not exactly an original idea.
