A large majority of newbie players almost always make a Warrior class for their first character. Mainly because it's the most basic of all the classes available. You don't have to worry about MP, Macroing tons of spells and your path is pretty straight forward. Your goal is to be the main fighter and kill everything that moves and not let the things attack the Mages.
It is generally good to start out as a Warrior if you'd like to play any sort of melee fighting class... Well, actually... I'd say start as Monk, here's what you do:

Start as MNK, level MNK to 18 and get support job quest done.

Go switch to WAR with MNK for subjob. Take WAR to 37.

Take whatever melee class you want to 75.

Of course, that's just the quickest way to choose your job.

As for subjob choices in general, you should pick a subjob that compliments your main job. Melee fighting classes tend to do best with melee fighting subjobs. /WAR is good for all-around damage dealing, /THF is usually for high weapon skill damage, and /NIN is for soloing or added protection using Utsusemi. As with melees, mages are best with mage subjobs. BLM will almost always sub WHM, WHM will usually sub BLM or SMN, RDM can sub BLM or WHM depending on the situation, and SMN pretty much always subs WHM.

As for making gil, THF is good if you're the kind who likes to farm, but farming isn't THAT great a money maker. If you want to make big money, you take up a craft generally, which doesn't require any sort of job levels, just a lot of capitol to start out.
I kinda don't really wanna be a warrior though.... Also, I would still like to know which server I should choose. ninja
Unless someone offers you a world pass, you really can't choose your server. Of course, you could beg for one, yeah........ What job do you want to be?
EDIT: LOL edited my retardation out. No one will have to see that stupid comment again >_>
Well, the best for summoner is Taru.....and I think Mithra are good for thf and drg......I wanna be a summoner myself......it'stime consuming.....or so i've been told.
The server doesn't really matter unless you already have friends who play.. the most differences between servers, besides the players, is probably item prices.

As for a job, melee classes are considered to be the easiest, though I started with a mage job. It just depends on what you'd rather be doing. If you like to be fighting the monster up close, be a warrior or monk. If you like to pull monsters, be a theif. If you like magic, you've got red, white and black mages to choose from. If you want summoner as an advanced job, you should start out as a mage, it will make things alot easier for you at level 30. You can be a SMN/THF.. though you'll get a lot of people who will complain about that combo.. but who cares, right? I was RDM/THF until I got Summoner.

The city.. Windurst seems to be a less popular one for some reason.. atleast it was on Phoenix server.. but if you start as a mithra or tarutaru in windurst, then you get a Windurst ring. If you're an Elvaan who starts in San d'Oria, you get a San d'Orian ring. and if you are a Galka or Hume who starts in Bastok, you get a Bastokan (sp?) Ring. Those are pretty much the only advantages to picking cities. You can buy the rings with conquest points later if you want though.
I read that becoming a summoner is hard... But I don't really care...
....yeah. Of course, I've been told some people on some other servers are just little asses all the time..........I go by alo of what I've heard.XP If you want a world pass to Remora, I could try and get you one....
Oh! That'd be awesome... but I couldn't ask you to do that....!

Getting Summoner just takes a long time. Its not that its hard... It took me 7 hours to get the drop item need for it sweatdrop Then you have to gather all of the Elements.. you go to areas with different weather stats..
But the you get Carbuncle! And after that you can get the other Avatars too. Summoner is alot of fun. Well worth the time spent getting it
