The god of balance and harmony, Cosmos, and the god of disorder, Chaos are involved in an eternal war between these two, is struck with a slight imbalance, leading to chaos filling the world. All hope lies in 10 warriors brought forth by Cosmos. In a story that is much aligned to Mortal Kombat, gods/goddesses have summoned mere mortals to do their bidding to control or destroy a universe.
The following is a list of stages available in the game. The grand total comes to 24 stages, the original stages plus their Omega counterparts:
- Old Chaos Shrine
Pandemonium
World of Darkness
Lunar Subterrane
The Rift
Kefka's Tower
Planet's Core
Ultimecia's Castle
Crystal World
Dream's End
Order's Sanctuary

There are 22 characters in Dissidia: Final Fantasy. The characters are listed below, excluding Gabranth and Shantotto.

Name: Tidus
Game: Final Fantasy X
Japanese Voice Actor: Masakazu Morita
Biography:
Tidus is the son of Jecht and the star Blitzball player of the Zanarkand Abes. He witnessed his home city of Zanarkand be destroyed by Sin. Sin was able to transport Tidus 1000 years into the future where he meets Yuna, a summoner on a quest to destroy Sin with help of the Final Aeon and her guardians. Tidus then learns that Sin is Jecht and tries to find a way to free his father and save Yuna's life from summoning the Final Aeon and end a never-ending cycle.
He is carefree and sometimes does not think before he takes actions. He can sometimes act like a child and become too emotional in wanting things to go his way. Because of this, he often tries to find alternative ways to problems and scenarios; A predominant one being the conflict between himself and his father. Tidus only has one thing he wishes to do once he finds his father, and that is to tell him how much he hates him for how he was treated in his childhood and putting his mother through after Jecht disappeared.
Due to Tidus's love for Blitzball, he uses similar abilities he uses in Blitzball in battle. His Overdrive, 'Blitz Ace', is accessed as an Ex-Mode attack. He wields a broadsword, and can be quick on his feet, flexible and acrobatic.

Name: Jecht
Game: Final Fantasy X
Japanese Voice Actor: Masuo Amada
Biography:
Jecht is Tidus’ father, and the current Sin of FFX. He came from Yu Yevon’s summoned Zanarkand, and, with Braska and Auron, helped defeat the Sin of the time by becoming Braska’s Final Aeon. Once becoming Sin, he traveled to Zanarkand to see bring his son to Spira, so that Tidus could one day defeat him and end the cycle of death.
A very egotistical man, Jecht is a star Blitzball player and a former alcoholic. He’s rarely ever home, and when he is, he’s either insulting Tidus or taking all of his mother’s attention, setting Tidus against him. Training at sea one day, he encounters Sin and is transported to Spira. Upon arriving, he’s immediately locked up as a heretic, until Braska sets him free to serve as a guardian. As he travels with Braska and Auron, he sees that his chances of getting home are slim, and gradually accepts his fate, becoming the Fayth for Braska’s Final Aeon.
Jecht is brash, tending only to insult Tidus when he’s around. In truth, he doesn’t know how to be gentle with his son, and he thinks his criticisms will toughen him up. He gave up drinking after an incident with a shoopuf. He’s very one-track-minded, wanting only to return to Zanarand, though his travels make him realize that it isn’t possible.
Not much is known about his fighting style, except that he carries a large sword. As Braska’s Final Aeon, he uses primarily beam attacks. As a last resort, he can pull a larger version of his sword from his chest.

Name: Zidane Tribal
Game: Final Fantasy IX
Japanese Voice Actor: Romi Paku
Biography:
The leading male of Final Fantasy IX. Part of the infamous band of thieves, Tantalus, Zidane helped kidnap Princess Garnet by Regent Cid and later at Garnet’s request. Together with Garnet and others, they journeyed all over to stop Queen Brahne and later Kuja from destroying the world.
Zidane is carefree and altruistic, despite being an orphan. He often annoys some of the serious characters by his playful disposition, but they eventually warm up to him. Zidane always puts others ahead of himself and is reflected in his quote, "You don’t need a reason to help people." Towards the end of the game, it is revealed that Zidane is a Genome from the planet Terra. He was created to destroy Gaia so that Terra would assimilate it and use the souls for the Genomes. Kuja, the first Genome created to be Gaia’s "Angel of Death," threw Zidane into Gaia before he could replace him.
A skirt chaser by nature, Zidane flirts with any pretty face that walks by, including Princess Garnet, who he repeatedly tries to get a kiss and/or a date from. However, later in the game this all changes when Zidane discovers that he truly loves Garnet.
Zidane wields two daggers, sometimes fused together as one, as his weapon. He uses a variety of techniques that involve thievery and hoodwinking the enemy. For every technique he masters, a new ability in his Trance, Dyne, is added, each being successively more powerful than the previous one.

Name: Kuja
Game: Final Fantasy IX
Japanese Voice Actor: Akira Ishida
Biography:
Kuja is the main antagonist of FFIX, first appearing as a weapon provider for Queen Brahne, namely her army of black mages. He later kills her and tries to overthrow Garland. He later tries to destroy all life by breaking the Crystal by absorbing all the souls he collected on Gaia.
Being the first of Garland's Genomes with a soul, Kuja was created to destabilize Gaia so that it could be assimilated into Terra. First acting through Brahne to incite war and collect as many souls as possible, he then kills her and openly turns against his own creator. Upon learning that he would only live until Zidane became more powerful than he, he killed Garland, destroyed Terra, and tried to destroy the crystal at the center of all existence.
Kuja prefers manipulation to outright fighting, having persuaded Brahne to war with the other countries on the Mist Continent. He operates under the belief that he is immortal; upon finding out that Zidane would be his successor in his death broke his illusions. He rejects his own identity, hiding his tail within his clothes, though it appears in his Trance form.
Kuja prefers to attack with magic rather than physically, wielding higher level spells. He also calls on his silver dragon to attack. In his Trance form, his appearance changes to a more feathery one, his tail no longer hidden. He also uses still yet more powerful magic, including Ultima.

Name: Squall Leonhart
Game: Final Fantasy VIII
Japanese Voice Actor: Hideo Ishikawa

Name: Ultimecia
Game: Final Fantasy VIII
Japanese Voice Actor: Atsuko Tanaka
Biography:
Ultimecia is the main antagonist of VIII, although her existence is not revealed until later in the game. A sorceress from the future, she sought to achieve Time Compression, in which only she would exist in a single point of time. Using a machine based on Ellone’s powers, she projected her consciousness into Edea, using her to get to Ellone so she could project herself further into the past.
Using Edea, Ultimecia sets herself up as first as Ambassador of Galbadia, then dictator after killing the current president. Using her position, she tries to destroy Balamb Garden and SeeD, but fails and is forced to possess Rinoa until she can get to Ellone. While she attempts to use Adell, a sorceress entombed in space, Squall plots to use Ellone to send her and Rinoa into the past just enough to start Time Compression. The plan works, and Ultimecia’s castle is revealed in the future.
Being from Squall’s future, little is known about her. Through Time Compression, she passes her powers onto Edea, thus setting the stage for SeeD’s creation and possibly fueling her hatred of it. She is very convincing (maybe even magically enhanced), using only her words to persuade Seifer into becoming her Knight.
Ultimecia is a sorceress, specializing in spatial magics. Since she is the last sorceress, she has all the powers of every sorceress ever alive. She also has the power to create and destroy magic. Griever is her Guardian Force, derived from Squall's Ring. She can junction herself to her GF, making it and herself more powerful.

Name: Cloud Strife
Game: Final Fantasy VII
Japanese Voice Actor: TBA
Biography:
At the age of fourteen, Cloud left Nibelheim to pursue his dream on becoming a 1st class SOLDIER. Like many before him, Cloud aspires to be as popular and powerful as the legendary Sephiroth. However, while on a mission to investigate a mako reactor in the mountains of his hometown, he was critically injured by Sephiroth's psychotic self-discovery moment. Cloud ends up disappearing for five years as he was used as a sample in Hojo’s mako experiments. Later, he inherits the Buster Sword from his dying friend, Zack and joins AVALANCHE as a mercenary. When Sephiroth reappears, Cloud concentrates his efforts into defeating him once and for all.
Cloud, although quiet, is a natural leader. His personality changes during the course of his journey in pursuing Sephiroth. He eventually opens up to the rest of his teammates, enabling the group to relate to him much easier and tackle complex problems and situations.
He wields the Buster Sword, which was handed down to him from Zack. Cloud, with his abilities learned from the Shinra Army and being a sample in mako experiments makes him a strong fighter by heart. His Limit Breaks are a based on either strength or by magic.

Name: Sephiroth
Game: Final Fantasy VII
Japanese Voice Actor: TBA
Biography:
The main villain of Final Fantasy VII. Sephiroth had burned down the village of Nibelhiem out of rage. He is defeated by Cloud in Mt. Nibel's mako reactor and is claimed dead by the local newspapers. Sephiroth returns five years later in order to find the Promised Land, in search for the Black Materia. He travels the world and was able to manipulate Cloud's mind numerous times into doing things against Cloud's will.
Sephiroth is a modest, powerful man with a brilliant mind. Ever since the "Nibelheim Incident", he has become unstable often crosses the line of insanity when placed in a desperate situation.
He is a powerful fighter and he wields his famous seven-foot sword Masamune. Sephiroth is an experienced magic user as well, as demonstrated from his battle with Genesis and Angeal in Crisis Core.

Name: Warrior of Light
Game: Final Fantasy I
Japanese Voice Actor: Seki Toshihiko
Biography:
Warrior of Light was the first ever hero in the series' history. Chosen by the player to be in one of six classes, the four Warriors of Light, after appearing on an island somehow and meeting with the king, ventured forth into the wide world to defeat Garland in hopes of rescuing Princess Sara. The king recognized them by the crystals that hung around their necks - crystals that symbolized balance and peace - the sign that the great sage Lukahn said to watch for.
The story didn't end with the heroes rescuing the princess. After crossing the newly built bridge onto the main continent, the warriors found out that there were all sorts of problems from pirates pillaging a coastal town, to the dark elves trying to overthrow the prince of the Elf Village, and those crystals which held were supposed balance seemed rather dim. Committed to restoring the light, by the end of this adventure these four brave souls ended up defeating Garland's true self in the past, known as Chaos, and his four elemental fiends.
The player named these would-be heroes, assigned them classes, and it was in the imagination of the player to create personalities for their in game persona. These Warriors range from a black mage, white mage, warrior, thief, black belt, and red mage; adding few customizing features as well as re-playability.
The Warrior of Light's role in Dissidia is currently unknown. Many speculate that this character is a combination of all the warriors of light from Final Fantasy I, providing a wide array of spells, abilities, and weaponry.

Name: Garland
Game: Final Fantasy I
Japanese Voice Actor: Kenji Utsumi
Biography:
Garland was very unique in his ability to create a time loop. A fragile version of his true self, Chaos, made his way into the court of the king and slowly gained trust. Eventually, Garland kidnapped Princess Sara and took her lute, an item that was passed down through the line of Cornerian Princesses. This lute is also what unlocks the passage in the past version of Garland's palace, and to seal the time loop. It had to remain in Garland's hands for his own protection.
Garland was known to be extremely crafty, but that's really what he had become 2000 years after his debut as Chaos. Easily, this fragile version of himself was defeated by the great Warriors of Light, and Sara returned to her castle at the beginning of the adventure, gaining the prized lute in the process. But he knew that to do things right, he had to have subordinates, the four fiends of the elements: Kary (Marilith), Lich, Kraken, and Tiamat. They blocked off the power of their corresponding crystals, which eventually netted them a tour through the afterlife, as the Warriors proceeded to restore the crystals to create the balance is obtained.
Regardless of being one of the brighter villains in Final Fantasy, he could have ironed out his plan before kidnapping Princess Sara. Many of the troubles the warriors encounter through the story had nothing to do with Garland's plight at all. He did not steal the fairy from the lake, he did not have the pirates working for him, and the dark elf Astos really did not care about the balance of light and dark. His infamous line, "I, Garland, shall knock you all down!", could be a descriptor in this new role in Dissidia.
Not much is known about how Garland is involved in Dissidia at this time.

On May 9th, a scan from Shonen Jump revealed that Dissidia: Final Fantasy will be something that resembles a fighting game. The screenshot on the left shows a layout of the battle HUD (Head-Up Display) with your opponent's bar at the top, and your own at the bottom. The horizontal bars are representatives of your current HP. The vertical bar next to the character portrait is the EX gauge (a limit gauge, if you will). The large numbers are referring to the number of "Brave" you have, or 'power/strength' your character currently possess which could effect combat is unique ways. The battle system itself is called "dramatic progressive action", a phrase referring to the dynamic changes for different movesets in different situations during battle.
A quick look at the top of the opponent's life-bar reveals the opponent's name as well as a numeral level, clearly showing RPG-esque elements in the game. We could also speculate the possibility of Ad-Hoc or Infrastructure online play with levels being integrated into it. The game is confirmed to have wireless battles.
On the bottom-right, we see "127 Exp Get", implying that you level up as you battle rather than receiving them afterwards as a reward. Right above that is "First Action Bonus" an obvious hint towards the fighter-style games. Later, Square Enix revealed that characters are customizable (to what extent is unknown), earning experience and gil.
The characters in the image are "floating" around, suggesting that there might be a lot of air combat dynamics in the game. The battle will offer full 360-degree freedom as well as destructible environments.

The second image shows a battle between Garland and Warrior of Light (which is now the official name for that character). We could also clearly see the letters "D", "r", "a", and "g" on the right side. This tells you if there's a chance of you getting defeated soon or not. Further inspection shows that the word to be "Danger", which in this context is most fitting.
"Fights revolve around the use of an individual set of special skills to do damage to your rivals. Each character's skills are displayed through a command list on the bottom-left corner, which changes based on distance from your enemy and other special factors. The battle system also includes evasion and jumping, although the controls are said to be simple enough that even players who aren't into action games will be okay.
Special moves include the skills that you'd expect to see given the background story of each character. Warrior of Light can transform using a Class Change command. So too can Zidane, making use of a Trance command. Warrior of Light also has an Excalibur command, and when facing off long range, gains access to a "Long Range" attack option." - IGN Staff

Images released in December of 2007 reveals that cross-overs battles between different Final Fantasies are possible. The image shown to the left depicts both the battle gauges of Kuja and Warrior of Light oriented in the same fashion as previous shots.
Other images also show the gauges aligned to the bottom side-by-side with Firion against Warrior of Light. Further analysis also reveals that protagonists could go against another protagonist in "dream fights", most likely a freestyle mode in Dissidia.
Controls for the game were also revealed on the official website. The commands and controller settings mimic similarly to action/adventure/fighting games such as God of War, Prince of Persia, etc. The digital pad is used to control the camera while the analog nub is used to move the character. The
button would in turn do HP damaging attacks, while a combination of
and
will transition to "EX mode", a powered up mode available when the EX gauge is full. Furthermore, the defensive tactics of the game include Guarding with the
button, and a combination of
and
would Dodge the attack instead.
Other moves include interacting with the environment with the use of the
button, similar to reaction controls in Kingdom Hearts II. And the
button is used as a "assist skill", such as stealing "brave" from the opponent. And finally the
button toggles the lock on the opponent. After Jump Festa 2008, many blogs have reported that the game plays similarly to Power Stone by Capcom and Psychic Force by Taito. It has received extremely positive reviews. However, there were some issues in the controls. Currently, Square Enix has taken down the Controls screenshots from the official website. It is not known whether the immediate take-down of the images after Jump Festa was an indication that the controls will undergo a revision or whether the site being redesigned for more content.

Dissidia Interview with Nomura
Full Translation[6.18.2008]:
General Translation from the Article
- "- Max level of 100.

- Due to a huge moveset, the cap for number of characters is 20.
- There's 20 characters so far. There will be some little surprises in store for us.

Ultimecia: Atsuko Tanaka (Motoko Kusanagi, Rosso the Crimson)
Kuja: Ishida Akira (Gaara, Zexion)
Jecht: Masuo Amada (Jecht)"
Selected Quote from the Article
- "Why Jecht over Seymour?
Nomura: Jecht may not have been the final boss (with Seymour being the mid-boss), but going with Sin would obviously not work. (laughs) I thought if we chose Seymour it would be hard to show a proper connection between him and Tidus, and we'd end up having to put Yuna in too. We decided the best choice with a solid relation to Tidus would be Jecht.
Dissidia Interview from Dengeki [5.30.2007]:
Selected Quote from the Article
- "On the reason behind Dissidia Final Fantasy being an action game, Nomura explains that the plan started after a discussion with Kingdom Hearts’ Yousuke Shiokawa and it was decided that a 3D action game based on Shiokawa’s team technical expertise is the best way to gather all the characters from the FF series. Shiokawa, who is the game’s director, acknowledge that the pressure is building up recently after the game’s public revelations.
PSP was chosen as the platform due to it’s ad-hoc mode and the fact that people generally don’t like split screen gaming. Nomura said that with its large install base, the PS2 maybe the natural choice but it also means that multiplayer modes has to be played on split screen, which reduce the fun factor by half."
Translated interview with Famitsu [5.21.2007]:
Selected Quote from the Article
- "Famitsu: But this game gives the impression of a versus fighting game, doesn't it?
Nomura: That just depends on how you customize the game. It's not just a simple system with loads of equipment. You can also set-up the battle time limit along with stage locations which will in-turn affect the rules of play.
Shiokawa: In whatever style you choose to play, you customize those portions. While it does come close to being a fighting game, it's also an entirely different play experience."

Speculation 2
2
A blog posted screenshots from a magazine showing Amano's artwork done for Dissidia. There isn't any sources or what publication the magazine was from, but the blurry screenshots holds some truth to them. I've compiled all 8 images in the blog into a 3x3 grid below with the speculation of characters shown in the screenshot.

Being hosted on http://www.jugem.jp/ , an internet hosting sub-domain provider, the validity of their information comes into question. Here's an excerpt from the article side by side with a machine translation from http://translate.google.com:
To sum it all up, it is suggested that the game will be a 3D fighter/battle with characters that span across previous titles. The game is confirmed to be for the PSP for the 20th Anniversary of Final Fantasy featuring Zidane, Kuja, Garland, etc. It was surprising that the Dissidia is not part of the Compilation of FFVII due to the popularity of that franchise.

- My real name is Selphie (I was born years before FFVIII was released [for those who are very ignorant]), and no, you may not call me that unless I address you by your first name. Any idiot not following the basic internet etiquette will be blocked permanently.
Who is involved in the making of this game?
- Yousuke Shiokawa, the battle designer for the famous Kingdom Hearts series is be working as the director on the game. He is joined by Tetsuya Nomura who is working as a Character Designer and Takeharu Ishimoto, the Composer of the Final Fantasy VII compilation as well as working with the Kingdom Hearts series and Legend of Mana.
What does Dissidia mean?
- Upon research, many claim that the word 'Dissidia' means "to lay in ruin" stemming from latin origins. However, Dissidia could also refer to discidium or discido, both meaning to tear apart or cut to pieces. It could also refer to "disagree". [ link ]
When will it be released?
- The Japanese release date is December 18th, 2008. The US is expecting to release mid-summer of 2009.
What medium would this game be in?
- This game will be available for the PlayStation Portable and ONLY for the PlayStation Portable.
I'm planning on importing this game. Will it work on my PSP?
- All PSPs are region-free, meaning that all PSPs will play every game ever made. I've tested this game on the PSP-1000, PSP-2000, and PSP-3000. All of them are working with this game flawlessly. Anyone who says otherwise is completely retarded.
Why is this game only being released for the PSP? Why not the PS2 or any other console system?
- In an interview with Nomura in the Japanese gaming magazine, Dengeki PlayStation, Nomura emphasized that a console would not be suitable for this fighting game. It was quoted from the article that the "PSP was chosen as the platform due to it’s ad-hoc mode and the fact that people generally don’t like split screen gaming." Furthermore, "[the] PS2 maybe [sic] the natural choice but it also means that multiplayer modes has to be played on split screen, which reduce the fun factor by half." [ link ]
Final Fantasy Dissidia or Dissidia Final Fantasy?
- The Japanese website typed it out as 『DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY』. But either way should be correct, just like Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, and so on. [ link ]
Okay, it's a fighting game. Will it suck just like Ehrgeiz?
- First of all, Ehrgeiz was made by a company called Dream Factory and PUBLISHED by Squaresoft for the PlayStation platform. It was released in the arcade by Namco a year before. Both Namco and Squaresoft had ZERO involvement in the making of Ehrgeiz. Therefore, there is a guarantee that this game, Dissidia, would outperform its so-called predecessor. Dissidia is being worked on by the person who was put in charge of the battle system in Kingdom Hearts.
Changelog:
- v3: 12.18.2008 - Added US release window.
v2: 6.19.2007 - Added "Why the PSP?" and "It'll be like Ehrgeiz" question.
v1: 5.07.2007 - Added Q&As.
