I like playing with Zidane(His Meteo Twist combo is pretty BA), Firion, and Cecil. Only villain that I play as is Sephy(pretty dull character, but you gotta love that masamune!)

Sephy's HP attacks are pretty bad except for the Sudden Cruelty to Heaven's Light combo. I can use pretty much every character efficiently, but if I had to choose...

Magic kind of annoys me. Not because it sux or anything, but because it makes some fights way too easy.

It's so hard to level Jecht and Exdeath up.

Yeah, Chaos characters in general tend to be tough to level up at first. Exdeath is especially so, since you don't get the two support abilities he really NEEDS to be remotely playable (Concentration and Snooze & Lose) until Levels 71 and 98, respectively. He's amazing once you set him up to gain 400-500 Bravery each second just by standing there and 1000+ each time he blocks, though.

...Jecht is another story; I'll never be able to learn how to use him. His combos are great but they're too big a pain to input correctly.

ExDeath and Jecht are both tricky characters. ExDeath's Reverse Polarity breaks guards now and Black Hole can be used on the ground to trap careless opponents so at least he now has some offense instead of being a complete turtle character.
Plying Jecht in lag is such a nightmare since his combos already take precision to land them offline. Not to mention trying to land them in a pinch with high pressure (EX Guard to combo when near death for example) is hard enough.

What annoys me is that some characters aren't given too much thought about their aerial and ground moves.

Kefka and Exdeath have moves that are air/ground equivalences of each other. Seems kind of lazy, don't you think?
