I can not help but wonder what kind of abilities some characters will have.
Let us take Vincent for example.
Vincent's abilties all summed up to him transforming.
...So how would that work out?
If this equals out to me being able to Galian beast in battle, Vincent FTW! scream
Another thing I am wondering about is the mid-air fighting thing.
I hated it in AC, I hate the idea of it here.
I am hoping that it will be more an insane jump / wall jump system as opposed to psuedo-flight.
It doesn't even look like theres a floor for most of the screen shots, and pretty much all of them are in mid-air. I think you might be a bit disapointed.
The big reason people aren't eager to get excited is
A. Bad experiances with the Arcade Fighter genre,
B. Lack of trust in SE to produce a good game, for personal reasons.
C. It has Sephiroth, so its bad by default.
Those will be your most likely answeres from this forum.
As for characters, each one seems to get a bit of uniqueness. Zidane obviously has Trance, and Light Warriar is supposedly noted to have a Class Change (Possibly pushing in Monk/Thief/WhiteMage/RedMage/BlackMage costume/skillsets) which easily makes Light Warriar 6 different characters skillwise, if that works out.
I suppose it comes down whose up. And mind you, although they're aiming to go beyond 10 characters, I can't imagine them having much more then a few extras. Remember, this is a fight for balance. Logic (Oh psh, who needs that, right?) would state there'd be for every character an equal opposite. I can imagine some representatives from Tactics, Tactics Advance, and maybe even a Chrono Cross cameo (Pause to imagine Chrono using Cyclone Blade with no gravity limitation, against Magus and his giant scyth.)
But beyond that? Not seeing much.
Adding in more light warriars kind of defeats this theme, but I won't complain.
But your question brings up oddpoints of what would characters from three and five do, since there are far more job classes, and no personalized abilities.
