The argument could be thrown either way. Take Chrono Trigger, for example. The main character was known as "Chrono" in Japan (well.. technically "クロノ" or "Kurono", but bear with me), but due to font spacing limitations, his name in the US is "Crono".

When Square Enix announced that Chrono Trigger is coming to the DS, they released trailers which are composed of montages with character names. Again, the Japan trailer shows "Chrono", and the US still retained "Crono".

Will they retcon it for Final Fantasy? Doubtful. They've kept Bartz and Firion. But who knows? Aeris is now Aerith. So anything is possible.
But Aeris has BEEN Aerith. She was only Aeris in the original game, yet she's been Aerith in every subsequent title ever since, including KH, KH:CoM, KH2, BC, AC, CC, and anything else I may be forgetting. Firion, Bartz, and Terra have never been called Frioniel, Butz, and Tina in the literal English version of FFII, FFV, and FFVI. Japanese names =/necessarily= English names, as Balthier has also demonstrated. And let's not forget the fact that Resident Evil is called Biohazard in Japan. If they were planning on changing their English names, I'm sure they would have done it by now in one of their many remakes.

Well, like I said, I doubt they'd retcon anything, but I don't want to discredit them immediately. If anything they're preserving it for the sake of nostalgia (much like Chrono Trigger). Nothing is more rabid than changing someone's precious memory and watching them go ballistic over it.

Yeah, I've been on the other end of that rabidness. Not fun. gonk
I'm still ticked off they aren't including monsters as anything more than brief summon bits.

To me, it seemed a logical conclusion that they would include classic enemies as part of a training mode. Considering the fact that this game is being created by the makers of the Kingdom Hearts series, it would seem any easy thing to recreate things like Imps, Ahrimans, and other iconic monsters for training mode battles, or encounters in-between major character encounters.

Instead we get to fight "Clones" of other characters. That to me just seems like a major lapse in the creativity and ingenuity that the staff had going for them in this game so far?

Why must they disappoint?
surely any such sense of disappointment is utterly redundant when one considers the abundance of praise which you have bestowed upon Dissidia thus far! you cannot expect it to tick every single box!
Lawl. Dissidia can't be all perfect.
But it's Final Fantasy! Clearly it is made of gold and infallible. xP

Exactly. We have the clear Japanese intent, and we have the clear translations in English, and we can't really know which will win. We know from "You Spoony Bard" that some original translationisms are kept, and we know from Final Fantasy Tactics, and Aerith, that some are thrown to the wind.

Butz fits better, vs. Bartz doesn't sound like a Sir Mixalot song.
Frioniel is the actual name, Firion was provisionally required.

Which will win? Who knows. (My gut agrees with you, that Americanisms will be retained in all cases; but my brain-pan doesn't like it nearly as much.)

I think we should have a stratedgy like game with moving airships around with Cids. All airships will be there. ninja

Cids > Heroes and Villans. pirate

idk...i dont think there is. i think the closest you will possibly get to that is maybe a dodge roll, but that will only work if they are lying still.
