neutral It's as much a fighting game as it is anything else. That's like saying the Budokai Tenkaichi series isn't fighting.

Try harder.

smash bros is a party game not a fighting game. Smash bros has no depth

since when does something need depth to be a fighting game?

Since when does smash have no depth?

never said it didn't :
It is a fighting game, just not the typical one with different button combinations and a life bar.

You pick a dude and beat on the other dude until you can eventually knock him out.

Sounds like a fighting game to me.

@TheMagicalBox: Unless you play stamina mode where you DO have a set amount of life which just reinforces the point.

It's not a fighting game. It's very competitive but it's not a fighting game. Fighting game characters have a specific discipline, while Smash Bros characters just have simple moves. You can string the moves together to make a combo, but combos in fighting games are much more complicated. I'd have to agree that it's a party game. Saying that you fight other people makes it a fighting game is like saying Mario Party is a fighting game because you fight other people.

You have never played at a high level of play if you think that.
You know, why can't Smash Bros. be both a fighting game and a party game?

Nice ad hominem bro.

Distinct Medalist

This game doesn't have multiple endings with each character explaining what happens with them now that the tournament is over. If anything this is a platformer. emotion_awesome
And that is what I think, what's the problem with the genre. In the 1980s, no fighting game company was confirming to any standards, because they had enough common sense to realize that the genre had it's own course, until Capcom came along and took concepts from dozens of fighters at the time making it the "standard".

Due to that, the range of diversity has been mediocre, because when it comes to traditional fighting games, none of them that I know of veered away from the Street Fighter template, making them either copycats or wannabes. Now, what does that say about the depth aspect? More of the same, obviously. On the other hand, Virtual On, Smash Brothers, Senko no Ronde and a few others are a different story, because the developers thought for themselves.
It's a sumo simulator. Push your opponent out the ring.

Because it is a fighting game, but also a very mediocre one at that.

There aren't even any circular movements involved with the character's attacks. (forward quarter circle 236, backwards quarter circle 214, 180 degree half circle 63214, 360s 89632147/874112369, DPs/Shoryukens 623, etc)

It's a very simple fighter made to appeal to children/extreme fighting game casuals rather than higher level players.

This is also the reason why higher level players refuse to acknowledge it as an actual fighter, since it's a fighter and a party game that relatively takes no skill to master.

TL;DR:

SSB is too easy for some people. They're irked that something so pitifully easy and simple could be acknowledged as one of this generation's fighting games.

So basically, since SSB doesn't conform to what other fighting games do like input motions and is simple enough for anyone to pick up, it can't possibly be a fighting game? Well, that crowd is gonna have to deal with it; it may not be a fighting game in their eyes, but most people are gonna call it that anyways.
