Planned Site Downtime

5PM PST (8PM EST, 7PM CST)

Hello everyone. It's been really busy for Gaia, and we're really thankful for how supportive everyone has been over the last few months. As Gaia continues to grow as a site, we have reached a point where we need to make some large changes to our servers. Because of this, we will be preparing for a Planned Site Downtime starting 5PM Pacific Time (8PM Eastern Time) on December 14th, 2005.

Below you will find some topics about the Planned Downtime which may answer any questions:

What is Planned Downtime?
Planned Downtime means that the Admins know Gaia will be offline for a period of time, and want to let everyone know in advance. In our case, we know that the readjustments to the Gaia servers will require us to take some things offline which would make the site slow (or simply not there) for many people. Instead, we opted to turn the site off for a few hours, and then bring Gaia back up at full speed.

12 Hours Seems long...
The site won't vanish right at 5pm (PST). Slowly, as changes are being made, features will be taken offline one at a time. Finally, the front page will be replaced with a information page, detailing the status for the site. This way, everyone will be able to stay informed about how things are going. Finally, when everything is back up, the site will pop online. It shouldn't be the full 12 hours, however, it's better to set aside some extra time, just in case. sweatdrop

Donations to the Site
Donations to the site are being caught by a secondary server (external to the downtime), which will continue to function during the entire process. After the migration, we'll continue to use this server as a fail-safe for PayPal in order to ensure sealed envelopes are delivered.

Vend System (time sensitive things on the site)
The Marketplace will be frozen during the Planned Downtime so as not to detract from auction durations and to give the store owners the amount of time they requested for their sales. Avatar Arena's weekly competition end at its regular time; the downtime is not expected to have an impact on the scoring.

The Merchandise Store (Shirts, Posters, Grunnys, Kikis)
No orders will be lost during the transition, however, during the Planned Downtime, no additional orders will be able to be placed. Once the site is live again, the Merchandise Store can be used normally again.

You said something about the front page-
Once the last feature is offline, the Gaia Home Page will become a status page to keep everyone informed about the process. This is a good place to come back to as well; once everything is ready to go again, that page will be replaced with the Gaia Home Page and all features will be turned on again.

Thank you everyone for your understanding as we work to improve Gaia further.
