Search slip-resistant shoes. You'll need them. Any place with drinks and food is gonna get slippery and those things will save you from falling and cracking your head open on the counter. I think vans makes some, so check it out. I just got some cheap ones from wal-mart, though.

p.p.s. any suggestions from other baristas about how-to-have-fun-w/-uniform-without-getting-fired also welcome.
This is your first job isn't it? rolleyes You're going to get coffee grounds, steamed milk, syrups, and all that fun stuff all over you, I wouldn't worry much about your uniform.

So? Some people still enjoy looking decent at work.
I have scars, lost shoes, lost pants, and much more all from working at a coffee shop for 4 yeras.

Actually I am a Starbucks barista and being very short aprons work as like a shield from EVERYTHING. My clothes are always untouched. I dunno how tall you are but the apron hits me about mid-calf.

Anyways most of the people go for the all black look so if you want to stand out I would head for white shirt and beige or white pants... The look is pretty simple though go crazy with pants and I would suggest like polo shirts think Lacoste or Ralph Lauren type things... make sure the dip in the collar isn't too extreme though I've been told off for that before.

As for shoes I would NOT suggest flats or anything that you would be uncomfortable in. Remember although you aren't really doing exhausting work you're gonna be on your feet for maybe 8 hours. It begins to get to you after the first few days of working. If you are willing to use the internet you can get custom VANS slip-ons and just have them made in all black like black rubber etc. I'm looking into doing that myself because I've just been using a pair of kind of like mary janes but they're sooo uncomfortable.

yeah and you can find some very ugly non-slips. i'm required to wear them for my work, and mine are soooo fuckin huge and clunky looking and just plain ugly.
so i'd go with what she said and search for ones made by vans.
there's a girl at my work who has ones made by converse, i know you said those aren't allowed but they might allow converse non-slips.

No converse? I would kill myself of a world without converse.

Mine are pretty ugly, but they're mostly covered by my pants so it doesn't really matter. I can't insist on slip-resistant shoes enough. They've saved my a** so many times.

Lmao. I work at Sbux and I wear black skinnies with black chucks and a black/white fitted button down. If I'm feeling playful, I'll wear a black skirt and black tights with the same kind of shirt. Good enough. I've survived so far.

yeah well... i wear pants and shorts to work (we can basically wear whatever we want, as long as it's not hobo looking and as long as it's a solid color), so you see mine a lot. they're SO huge! gonk

get black vans. that's what i would do.

i got some of those for my job at the movie theatre and they're pretty awful

i mean they're not like all too /uncomfortable/ or anything, but they feel like big rubber things around my feet and also when i look down i feel like i'm looking at a boy's feet and i am a girl

i didn't really know what to look for though when i bought them 'cause it's my first job and i never payed attention to the footwear of the employees when i went to see movies there though so i didn't really know i could just get like any kind of black shoe really and be fine. one of my bosses, a couple days ago i saw her wearing black moccasins, and somebody else who works there just wears these cute mary-jane typish shoes (you know, like flats with one or two little straps, that are so popular now), and i'm like i wanna wear that!!!! so i'm gonna get different shoes now.

it's not even totally about like fashion or whatever, i just feel really uncomfortable generally when i'm wearing clothes i don't like. and i feel /so/ relaxed after i take off my shoes when i get home, like better than you should feel after taking off the shoes that you searched the entire mall and other stores and stuff you don't like for hours the day before you start your first job just trying to find some normal black shoes.

anyways, starbucks seems like they would be pretty lax about stuff like that, i'm sure you can just get some normal light shoes that are comfortable and they'll be totally cool about it. you might not want to get something that really exposes your feet at all just because you're probably gonna spill some hot stuff once in a while but you wouldn't need like thick boots or anything, i don't think.
