As fanfiction authors, we all know how hard it can be to come across readers who will give proper feedback and be honest in their reviews about what they thought of our stories. This thread is meant to be a place where people who genuinely want to improve themselves as writers can come to ask for constructive criticism while helping others at the same time.

We work on a basis of equal trade. This means that if you want to receive concrit, you're going to have to give some in return - basically, someone will critique your story if you critique theirs. You might find some people here who are willing to offer you criticism for nothing in return, but bear in mind that they are the exceptions rather than the rule. Please don't abuse their generosity.

On a practical level, this means that you'll be submitting the information about your stories to this thread (using the form found below) and specifying what you're willing to read in return (fandoms, genres, etc.). After your story's accepted, you'll be free to contact the other authors who are also participating and see if they want to exchange fics with you.

The following post contains a list of all the active authors of this thread you can contact in order to start an exchange, as well as the names of those who have been blacklisted and should therefore be avoided. By active, we mean that they have shown an interest in participating at least once during the past two months. Inactive users will simply be removed from the list and will have to resubmit their information if they want to join again.

Now, in order to guarantee that you'll receive proper concrit, we have a certification system. Those who have proven themselves to be good critics (by being quick to review, making good points in their comments, and being all around helpful) will be added to our list of certified reviewers. As a user of this thread you'll be able to ask for concrit from any other user, but these certified reviewers will be the only ones who we'll be able to say with 100% certainty will do a good job.

In order to manage if someone should gain certification over regular membership - or conversely, if they should be banned for not following the rules of the thread - we ask that participants fill out a brief survey after receiving their concrit. Don't worry, you won't have to criticize the criticism, we're just interested in knowing if you were pleased with the results or not.

Lastly, please remember that this is an exchange and that simply posting your story and moving on will probably not get you many reviewers. In fact, if members do not post at least a couple times a month they will be removed from the thread listing. Just the same as it pays to stay active in the fanfiction community, it pays to stay active here. We do not condone people who think they can get something for nothing. Show you're interested in getting reviews and you will get them, simple.

To get things started simply submit your stories using the form below. If you want to submit more than one fanfic, you may do so by filling out a form for each fic. However, bear in mind that when you start an exchange, it will be fic for fic. Meaning: each person involved in the exchange is only obligated to comment on one story (unless you trade multiple fics at a time of course).

What I will read in return:

Now here's the hard part: make sure you give good concrit. One-line reviews saying that a story was great or some-such thing are not considered constructive criticism, and neither are reviews that attack an author personally or do nothing but insult a story without offering justification or suggestions on how to improve. Those types of reviews are not allowed here but we understand that some people don't always know what to include so here are a few things you should keep in mind when composing a review:

- Always try to point out something you liked about the story: it's just as important for an author to know their strong points as well as their weak ones.
- When you point out something you disliked or thought could have been better, try to offer some suggestion on how to improve it: never say something is bad without explaining why. This is the most important thing about giving a good review because ultimately criticism doesn't exist to let us know if we're good or bad writers, but to help us improve by pointing out what areas we need to work on.
- Be as honest as possible in your review: remember that the review is about their story and nothing else. Don't make petty remarks just because someone said something you didn't like in regards to your own story. It is guaranteed that you won't always like what others have to say about your work but that should never affect how you review something.

Here's a list of aspects you might want to analyze in your review. You don't have to talk about all of them - think of them as a starting point if you don't quite know what to talk about in your critique:

- how original is the plot of the story and how solid is it?
- how IC (in character) or OOC (out of character) are the canon characters?
- how well-rounded and realistic are the author's original characters?
- were there a lot of grammar and spelling mistakes?
- did you like the writing style?

Finally, to make sure everyone understands what kind of critiques we're trying to promote in this thread, here's an example:
Quote:
I liked how you portrayed the canon characters. It felt like watching a missing scene from the original show, because of how typical they were acting.

As for the story itself, I thought that while the general premise has potential, the way the plot is developing could definitely be improved. The opening situation is overdone and can be found in pretty much every fic that focuses on this theme - you should try to add your own little twist to it to make it more interesting - and as for what happens from that point on, it gets pretty predictable after a while and I didn't think it took into account all aspects of the world you're working on - try to avoid taking an easy way out of a situation and really ponder the possible consequences of the characters' actions.

Another thing I nothiced is that you tend to shift from a first-person to third-person narrative pretty often. Keep your point of view consistent. And try not to insert your own comments in the middle of the story - it's disruptive.

Grammar-wise, there were few mistakes. I could only find a few long-winded sentences in the first three paragraphs that could probably be cut up into smaller bits to make them more impacting and less ambiguous.

Overall, I think it's a story that has the potential to shine if you put in the time and effort to polish it up and smooth the rough edges.

Once you've accepted to criticize a story, you'll have a limit of seven days to do so. After that, if you've failed to review a story, the exchange will be considered void and you'll be blacklisted. We won't care about excuses - don't commit to something you know you won't be able to do in the first place. (If the story is particularly long however, this deadline can be extended.)

After those seven days are up, regardless of how the exchange went, we would like for the participants to each fill out the following form to let us know what they thought of the experience and to help us keep a record of how true people are being to the idea of this thread. Please send a PM to The Fic Exchange with the following:

Name:
Reviewer's name:
Was the exchange successful?
How helpful was the review?
How would you classify the reviewer's general attitude (was it too harsh, were things explained clearly, do you feel you were flamed rather than critiqued, etc.)?
How did you like the experience?

By sending us this form you will help us determine how we will distribute "certification points". These points are an arbitrary way for us to determine who will become a certified member. Each owner assigns points differently (one might give a 2 for a good review while another might give a 3) and there is no 'official' number one must reach beforehand, it is simply up to whoever is updating at the time to decide who gets certified (if we think you have enough points to be moved up then we will promote you). Just do your best and leave all this up to us!

We hope you'll find this thread useful and that it will allow you to improve your skills as a writer. We would also like to reinforce one last time that this is NOT a place where you can go to in order to promote your fic or receive blind praise - quite the contrary, actually.

If you have any questions or suggestions about the way this thread works, feel free to post them here, or contact us via our mule The Fic Exchange.

Here is the list of people who have completed the form above and submitted a story, or in some cases, stories. By clicking on their names you will be taken to their post which contains information about their work. (If you find any broken links, please let us know!)

Each member has the right and the ability to update their story's post whenever they need to, however there are two small things we ask of you. The first is to remember to tell us when you update the 'What I will read in return' section so that we may update this post as well. Second, please do not change your post to another story while you're in the middle of an exchange. If you wish to add another story then please submit it in another post.

Also, if anyone would like to volunteer as a reviewer without submitting a story of their own, that's fine with us. Simply fill out the 'What I will read in return' section of the form and post it. If at a later date you want to add your fic, just post the form like everyone else and the info will be updated.

Fandoms written: Sailor Moon
What I will read in return: I will do most anything in the anime fandom. In terms of books I can read fanfiction for Twilight, The Southern Vampire series, Uglies, Midnighters, and His Dark Materials. I have read all the Harry Potter books, but keep in mind I am not a major Harry Potter fan. I am working on getting through Lord of the Rings, so if you have fanfiction for that series I will probably be able to understand what’s going on. I am also reading Enders Game, so I will be able to read fanfiction for that very shortly. If there is any other various books you have fanfiction for post them, because I do read quite a bit. I also read fanfiction for Buffy, Angel, Xena, Charmed, Eureka, and most any other scifi show except Star Trek.

PadawanCyn [x]:
Fandoms written: Naruto and Saint Seiya
What I will read in return: I'll read pretty much anything, even if I'm not familiar with the fandom, but the ones I'm really comfortable on are Escaflowne, Full Metal Alchemist (anime only - I don't want to be spoiled), Generator Gawl, Naruto, Saint Seiya, Final Fantasy VII (and compilation), Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Supernatural and Stargate SG-1.

Lady Sedia Auvryarn:
Fandoms written: Harry Potter
What I will read in return: Mostly, I will read anything if you really want my opinion but I really don't care for Naruto or Twilight. Stuff I like: Harry Potter, Robin Hood BBC, all forms of Stargate, all forms of Sailor Moon, Ultima Online, all forms of X-Men, Hercules/Xena/Sinbad....literally a billion more! On a side note, if anyone would like help specifically with character development, I have a lot of experience in that!
Status: Complete or Near Complete only
Genres/Ratings/Warnings/Length: any (all exchanges must be of relatively equal length)

White Rabbit Redux:
Fandoms written: Pokémon
What I will read in return: Although I am not a fan of most fan-pairings in any fandom, I'll put my bias away and read the story for the sake of possibly reading a good story.

CommanderShipper Kaida [x] [x] [x]:
Fandoms written: Pokémon and Naruto
What I will read in return: I'm most comfortable with Naruto (be it Shippuden or not) and Pokemon. Others I am willing to read are Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Dragon Ball (Z), Yu-Gi-Oh Millenium World, Rosario + Vampire, Vampire Knight, Artemis Fowl, Harry Potter, Yu Yu Hakusho, Tegami Bachi, Final Fantasy (IV only, please), and .hack//Another Birth. I am also willing to read any genre you throw at me, so give me your best shot. Just to warn you, I will only read M-rated fanfictions if they do NOT contain sexual content. Last thing, I'm not so great with handling how in/out of character characters are.

Quixotic Catalyst:
Fandoms written: None, but still wants to help out!
What I will read in return: I'll look at anything, I don't mind. Just as long as it's not gushy "omg i luv edward" Twilight fanfic. o__o;;
Certification Points:

borderline_mary:
Fandoms written: Yu Yu Hakusho
What I will read in return: For canon nitpicking and in-depth characterization, Yu Yu Hakusho is by far and away my best fandom, but I'm reasonably competent for Slayers, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Evangelion as well; I can also wing it for a fair number of other anime -- just ask about any particular one and I'll let you know. I know some Harry Potter, and a large smattering of book fandoms in general, as well as the odd TV show. Again, just ask. I'll read just about any genre or fic type, though I'm not a fan of rapefic and don't care much for PWP.
Certification Points:

Vengful_Soldier:
Fandoms written: Half Life 2 and Episode 1 & 2
What I will read in return: I'll read anything pretty much that isn't anime or Twilight... I'm serious, I'll read anything except anime or Twilight. I may be screwing myself over on this but I just really want my story to be read damnit! I do anything to get that done!
Certification Points:

bittsweetmis:
Fandoms written: Twilight, Harry Potter xover
What I will read in return: Bleach, Star Trek IX, Harry Potter, Twilight, Final Fantasy VII/X/X-2, Kingdom Hearts, Ouran High School Host Club, Fruits Basket, Fushigi Yuugi, Sailor Moon, Alice 19th, Gundam Wing, Weiss Kreuz, Tsubasa Chronicles (and xxxHolic), X-men (movies and all cartoon verses), Batman (Bale Movie Verse) and the Hana Kimi and Hana Yori Dango JDramas
What I won't read: I prefer not to read het or yuri, especially not ones with OCs as either the main (or a major) character or paired with the main character. Minor OCs are ok
Certification Points:

xDreamCatcher [x]:
Fandoms written: Big Bang (a korean band)
What I will read in return: Naruto, D.Gray Man, Skip Beat, Kuroshitsuji, Bleach a lot of anime mostly or Big Bang (the Korean band) if you are familiar with them as well as Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts. I don't mind getting spoiled on anything. I never played the KH game or FF games but... I'll be willing to read them nonetheless ^^ I would be willing to read almost anything ASIDE from any thing that has to do w/ smut or purely sexual stories. I read mostly BL stories, but I can put aside my bias in hopes of reading a good story. I will read almost any ratings that are M if they are not sexually explicit. If there is any sexual content in the story, I will only read if it's on a minimal level and not too graphic.
Certification Points:

AlexisWolf77:
Fandoms written: None, but still wants to help out!
What I will read in return: I am willing to looks at stories for YYH, Inuyasha, Fruits Basket, Gantz, and Kingdom hearts. As for books, there are a lot of books that I have read and am willing to read fanfics made after them. To avoid making a huge list of books I have read, just PM me and I will let you know if I have read the book. If I haven’t I can take a stab at reading your fanfic anyways, but I am not sure how much help I will be with critiquing it. One last note about what I am willing to read, I much more enjoy fanfics with original character that the authors have made up. As for things I will not read…Naruto (I know it is big now, but I do not know much about it), or any pairing between same gender (I am not against it, just not big on reading it), I believe that is all really.
Certification Points:

What Fandom/Genre would you like to try? Harry Potter, Voldie Era Psychological Drama
What new things are you going to try? My challenge is more about the psychology aspect of villainy: seeing what goes on in the head of someone like Tom, how he goes from first meeting someone to getting them to do whatever he says, and trying to get that down on paper correctly. I have never had to write about that side of it before, seeing them doing evil things or having evil thoughts sure that's easy, everyone can do 'bad guys', but to go into that kind of mind and to write from that perspective would be a great challenge for character development. Really, how often do we truly see evil characters written without some sort of 'good and moral' overtones in the scene? Its usually their ranting about how they want to blow up the world and the hero yells about how he will stop that from happening blah blah... razz

What Fandom/Genre do you normally do? Currently Naruto, adventure
What Fandom/Genre would you like to try? Naruto. As for genre, I'm not sure what it is. Drama, maybe...
What new things are you going to try? I usually write about the good guys saving the day and being all role-model-ish and heroic despite their flaws. This time, I'd like my main character to be an ally of the established bad guys, who is capable of doing anything in order to get revenge on the good guys. I'd like to test how well I can make sense of and write what's going on inside her twisted little head - and how far I can go before my righteous-o-meter implodes.

Link to the story: A History of Violence
Fandom: Pokémon
Summary: A race against time, two factions fight one another to gain the powers of the all mighty deity, but how far will each team go to reach their destination?
Genre and eventual pairings: Drama / Tragedy. OC pairings
Warnings: Rated R for Restricted. Graphic War Violence, Brief Strong Language
Notes on any aspects you're interested in receiving feedback about and/or anything else you feel is pertinent: Everything. Tone, theme, grammar, the works. (If possible)
Brief excerpt of the story:

[Notice:: This will contain several errors, so I'm sorry if the mistakes disrupts the reader from continuing.]

Further down the street she stared into a diner – a diner that would normally found in the 40’s. This diner had remained intact. In fact, its business has always been top notch; the food had always been second to none, according to critics. In the diner several people in suits were sitting around the counter, drinking what was assumed to be coffee and watching a breaking news bulletin on the television. On the television was the figure of the President of the Global Police Force, otherwise known as the GPF. The current President was actually a Jenny, but had played her cards right and progressed through the ranks, eventually gaining the office of President of the GPF. She stood in front of a podium, several different cameras staring directly at her, the flashes of cameras taking her picture blinding her vision. A conference of reporters sat facing her, awaiting what she had to say to the rest of the world.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press,” she began with a hint of nervousness in her voice, yet almost untraceable to the naked ear. “For the past decade we’ve uncovered and disbanded several terrorist groups in hopes of bettering the world around us – bringing peace to the lives of our fathers, and mothers, and children. We’ve brought their leaders to justice, and incarcerated those affiliated in their name. A blanket of tranquility covered our nations. Unfortunately, when times are at their brightest, a dark cloud hides the light. This time around an old nemesis has returned to try to regain control. This time around our old nemesis has created several new branches outside of the Kanto region. After hours of excruciating interrogations and years of endless fighting and bloodshed, enough evidence has been built up to this conclusion.” She paused for several seconds, debating in her head whether she should really say this. She made up her mind. “It is to our knowledge that Team Rocket has created a massive military base in the Orre region where they are building, much to our dismay, weapons of mass destruction.” A loud murmur burst from the reporters and spectators. “I know that this topic would spark up much controversy, but with the event that occurred earlier today in the Sevii Islands, and the immense amount of evidence discovered from Ground Zero have led us to this final conclusion. I will not be answering any questions this evening. Thank you.” As she walked away from the podium the reporters shouted questions, drowning out their own voices, combining into a chatter of nonsense.

Fandoms and genres you're willing to read for in return: Not much of a rater. In the end it always seems to come out negative because of my extreme critiquing. I'll critique anything as long as it doesn't involve Twilight, Harry Potter, Naruto (with exceptions), Fruits Basket, Hellsing, and most yaoi/yuri stories.

Well, 'ello. Glad you made this thread.

Sorry if I'm doing this wrong; I won't protest if you request that I delete my post.

I don't really have anything to be criticized, but I'd like to give some constructive criticism out to some of the authors and authoresses on Gaia. I prefer to read Naruto, Pokemon, Death Note, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Dragon Ball Z fanfictions.

And just a little side note, I don't read any M-rated fanfictions if it has sexual content in them.

As I said before, if you request that I delete my post or I did something wrong, I won't protest. I'm a loyal dog, er, fox. Well, whatever. ><

And if you would like to address me, instead of calling me by my terribly long username, just call me Kaida Kaguya. Or Kaida. Whatever is shorter.

Hope to be your faithful reviewer.

Hey we are happy to have you ^_^. I think we have pretty much all anime fanfiction up right now, I know there is at least one Naruto, and one Pokemon fanfiction posted. Feel free to critique, and PM, or post (if the author doesn't mind) your critiques. I think we are all free so if you want to post any of your work and pair with one of us feel free, we don't bite. biggrin Just remember to leave an insightful critique, considering that is the whole point of this thread. No one sentence critiques. Even the best authors have something to improve on.

Hi, White Rabbit and Kaida! Glad to have you!!

We'll add you to the list now, Kaida, but as milila said, if you ever want to submit a story in the future, feel free! ^^

I just thought of something...would The Fic Exchange mind changing this in my submitted thingy: "I really don't like Naruto very much" to "I really don't like Naruto or Twilight very much" xp hehe

also how are we supposed to go about submitting reviews for stories that aren't on gaia? Like milila's is on fanfic.net... do we just PM reviews, post them here, what? sweatdrop yes I am known for asking lots of questions cause I am a detail Queen xd

Btw milila I was going to read your fic for fun anyways hehe but I thought we should start this "exchange" thread off with an actual exchange whee ...I know your not a major HP fan but thats all I have up at the moment sweatdrop there are quite a few to pick from though so I hope you can find something you like 3nodding
