Welcome to the thread, FlatteredPawn. Pleased to meet ya. I'm Kaida Kaguya, and I'm unfortunately tied to this sub-forum. I'm not a very interesting specimen, so you may want to ignore me. XP

Aww, don't bring yourself down like that. Something tells me you're not getting enough hugs... FlatteredPawn, despite what she says, Kaida here has an unnaturally sharp eye to catch grammatical and spelling mistakes. I'm sure you won't regret it if you ask her to read your stuff. ^^
Oh, now that's going a bit overboard. XD

Yeah, two hugs so far ain't what I'd call "great". XP

Well, I'm still tied to the sub-forum. Anybody got a chainsaw?
Sorry, my chainsaw broke when I tried to do the same.

BTW, if you want to edit the info about what you will/won't read, just let me or milila know what you want that text to read and one of us will change it.

Hello everyone...

I'm new to the Fanfiction forum, I mostly stick to FanFiction.net... but I'm working on a Fic currently that's taking up a lot of my time and energy. I posted it here in hopes to get some costructive critism before posting it on FF.net. I wish to edit/change/add anything the readers pick apart so it can be as enjoyable as possible.

It's a Harry Potter FanFiction, you've probably seen it kicking around... it's called Dumbledore's Legacy. It's fully planned out, and will come out to be about 20 chapters long - though the only comment I have recieved here is that my chapters are too long so I have been attempting to shorten them. I have only four chapters posted.

I was wondering if anyone here would like to review what I have so far? I will return the favor if asked... though my chapters are rather lengthy. Here is a filled out form from the first page.

---

Link to the story: Dumbledore's Legacy

Fandom: Harry Potter (New Generation)

Summary: Albus Potter is due to start his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The wizarding world is settled into the peace and tranquility that Voldemort's downfall has created. However, a wicked plot is afoot; because while power and greed exist, so does an enemy... and this one has its eyes set on Harry Potter.

Genre and eventual pairings: Children's Fantasy. No pairings in this story other then the ones that existed in the book series and the ones mentioned in all the JK Rowling interviews. I'm trying to keep the story as accurate as possible.

Warnings: It is a long Fan Fiction

Notes on any aspects you're interested in receiving feedback about and/or anything else you feel is pertinent:
I have one OC that I feel is needed in the story (a Muggle-born, used to re-introduce the Potterverse, he's also used to discover important things that have occured in the 19 years following Deathly Hallows). I'm worried he might take attention away from the main character Albus.

Brief excerpt of the story:
He slowly unstuck the seal, careful not to damage it as he slid out the papers within.

Reading it in seconds, Albus looked at the equipment list and smiled. He already had some of the books that were required, but there were a lot he would need to pick up at Florish and Blotts – in Diagon Alley.

Albus read the letter again - slowly - carefully going over the words “you have a place at Hogwarts: School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.” He felt elated, and if his eyes weren’t trained on the parchment in his hands he would have noticed the wistful expression on his father’s face.

Fandoms and genres you're willing to read for in return: Naruto, Harry Potter, Twilight, Narnia, Pokemon... just ask, I'm willing to really review anything.

Welcome, and we are happy to have you. We added you to our Fanfiction archives. feel free to go over and see if there is any one you want to exchange with any one. We have some really talented writers who can give you great advice.

wahmbulance *begin rant* wahmbulance
too long? That chapter length is standard for me when writing novels...I don't understand people who can say they read a 500 page book in one sitting but complain about a 6-7k word chapter...... don't let anyone every tell you when to cut off a chapter, it should be cut where it feels right for the story not where someone starts to complain evil If someone is really interested in the story then they will read it no matter how long the chapters are.

Really stupid question - do reviewers go to the people, or do the people come to us?

If you catergorize yourself as a 'specimen' I'm sure it'll be in my best interest to keep an eye on you. Are you the type that likes to float in a jar, or escape from the lab?

I think I'll PM Lady Sedia and see if she's up to reading my story. A lot of her HP FanFic's look very promising.

Haha, worry not...! I keep it in reserve only for misbehaving fanfics these days. (In fact, I have one right now in need of attention! Please excuse me... ^^)

@ Sedia: What a relief! I was starting to think I've been doing this for too long... And I'll second your rant, and add this: replying with «tl;dr» does not make one seem witty or cool in any way.

Yay, happy 200th post, thread! 3nodding

I am in total agreement with you on this. Hell, unless I am reading a one shot or short story I don't even look at a fic under 15,000 words. At least after arou 1nd5,000 there is a good shot that the author will probably finish the story. I hate starting a fanfiction, that the author suddenly decides to drop. It is a pet peev of mine.

«tl;dr» ..... *sends death ninja to kill* ninja

and milila I have a bunch of novel length stories that just stop lol not because I don't plan to finish them but I lose steam and take a break and it takes me awhile to get back to it but yes I understand the feeling of annoyance when a fic just stops xp

Talking to FlatteredPawn I got curious about something. Has there ever been an instance in your writing that was almost to hard for you to write? Pawn reviewed Lineage and there is a very gruesome part in Part 3: Gatehouse. It was the second hardest thing I have ever written. The first was a scene in my HP novel "Their Last Years" that I had to actually stop writing several times because I just couldn't bring myself to do it at the time.

There are times when such things are necessary, like certain characters dying or having a character realize something very painful, but that doesn't make them easy to write. Anyone else come across this? Whether in something you found really hard to write or read...

It's happened.

Save rare exception, writing does not come as an easy thing to me. It's so hard sometimes that I genuinely wonder why I keep doing it. As such, I try to stick to writing about themes that I like. If my story requires me to go into something that I know will give me trouble or that I'm uncomfortable with, I usually try to find a way around it. Time-skips, chapter breaks, letting the reader know what happened through the characters' dialogues after the fact... those devices are good friends. It's very rare that I'll force myself to write a situation that I don't like/don't want to.

I really like tragedy, the macabre and horror, so funnily enough, the scenes I skip the most are the happy, fluffy lighthearted moments. Must be why my character developing skills suck and all my stories are plot- rather than character-driven, haha.
