Anyway, do you ever get annoyed when people submit 'fanfictions' in your fandom's archive when the canon's main character is used ONLY for a connection? Fanfictions are easy because the world is already set up, the characters are already developed, but others are using this to publicize their OC's. It's infuriating in our fandom! scream
Out of curiosity, which fandom are you referring to?
While I understand and sympathize with how you feel -- I have no doubt that this could be quite frustrating if it occurs all the time -- I can't help but take a bit of an offense. Are you implying that simply because someone chooses not to use a series' characters in their writing that they are not the series' fan? That they cannot be a fan of the series' setting?
Every fandom has characters that certain fans dislike. Sometimes the more generally popular ones can be loathed by others. Does leaving this character out of my writing when they might be the canon's main focus somehow make me unworthy of calling myself a fan?
I am currently working on a fic similar to what you have mentioned. As I stated awhile back in this thread, I've been working on a rewrite of the original Tales of Symphonia. It has an entirely original main cast, and I'm having a lot of fun with it. The original cast make brief appearances or are mentioned now and then, but they are no longer the focus. Collette is not the Chosen of Mana, she and Lloyd and the others are not a part of the group traveling the worlds. It still takes place in the worlds of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. The new cast interacts with a lot of the supporting cast from the game.
Am I to understand that this is not to be considered fanfiction? I certainly can't call it an original piece -- I've borrowed too heavily from the original. So then, Cezille07, what
do I call this "fanfiction" that I have been working on for over two years?
In closing, yes, fanfiction
is easy because most of the work has already been done for you.
Don't call someone else's writing a joke simply because they wanted to put in a bit more effort.
