Well, since Aurora said "You're not the only one who knows the meaning of sacrifice..." I'm guessing that it had something to do with the curse she was under - magics cancelling one another out and such, at least for a limited range. Besides... Rumpel isn't one to just leave everything to chance, when crafting a spell. He's one of those tricksters with a constant ace up his sleeve, and I'm pretty sure he manufactures the aces himself.
