I suppose that, according to Olya, a person who does not tell you about how much they like broccoli the very first time they meet you is actually lying to you about their affinity for broccoli. Fiend! They should not be tolerated.
It's a lot different. You aren't going to be pursuing a romantic relationship based on broccoli.
Not all people are okay with that sort of thing. Some people are straight and would be disgusted with the idea of dating someone that was a "transsexual."

Now why the hell did you put the word transsexual in quotations?
Because maybe these people have a problem totally unrelated to "sex" or "gender." It's a deeply rooted psychological thing, and there are other ways to deal with it.

You are not an expert and you have no idea what you're talking about.

Gender Identity Disorder simply means one whose gender doesn't match their sex completely. No other issues like "Mommy never loved me" or whatever.

Do you understand the difference between sex and gender?

Also, there absolutely no evidence that it's a nurtured condition. It's quite obviously an inborn one.

Transsexuals come from all walks of life and have vastly different personalities. The only thing most transsexuals have in common is GID. There is absolutely no psychological profile of a transsexual.

Um, no offense, but if you have a v****a, you're a girl. By law and by most people's logic.
Maybe to yourself you're a "man" or whatever, but in most people's eyes you're still a girl.

I never understood why this kind of thing matters so much to people. So you don't want to be a girl. I don't really see what's so ******** awful about being a girl, but okay. Why would you be so uncomfortable in your own body? Why do you think being the other gender is a solution?

Maybe you have big problems in your life. Maybe you have issues with yourself. But I don't see how being the other gender or pretending to be the other gender is going to fix these issues. Just be YOU. Forget about fitting into gender stereotypes, or being hung up on what society thinks you are.

I probably sound like a bigot, but I really don't understand why people get so hung up over this.

Take your ignorance elsewhere.
Transgender people are not pretending to be the opposite gender. They are uncomfortable with their bodies because they have Gender Identity Disorder, and living as the other gender is the solution. It isn't about gender stereotypes or being hung up on what society thinks of you. Transgender people are not rejecting their gender role. They are rejecting their gender identity. The only issue transgender people have with themselves is that they were born with the wrong damned set of sexual traits and chromosomes.
Yeah, but this is a "society inflicted" disorder. If all these surgeries and hormone treatments weren't available, people would just suck it up and live with their gender like everybody else.
But all these options are available, so it gets the people who are prone to that kind of thinking all riled up.
Do you think people worried about this stuff 100 years ago before these "treatments" came out? Nope. They just went on with life. Sure, some things about each gender suck. Each has its ups and downs. But changing your gender and permanently ******** up your body is no cure for mental illness and being unhappy with your life. =/

No, this just shows your ignorance. There is a massive amount of historical proof of people living in the gender roles they were comfortable with despite the social repercussions of it. The only difference is that we can intervene medically now to help people out.

Back then all they could do is live out their lives in the best way they knew how to. Binding breasts, trying to disguise the physical characteristics that caused them so much pain. This isn't about society. This is about a disconnect with the body.

You should really look up the suicide statistics for transgender people. This isn't a choice, this isn't something someone can just "deal" with.
I would rather live with a mental disorder than go through dangerous, painful surgery when I don't really need it.
Some people would do anything to be healthy. =/ I don't see why people put themselves through all this. Surely there must be some other way.

first of all trannys don't always HAVE sugery. they just ACT like their gender. there are DIFFERENT types of trannys, but the lines often get blurred from one definition to the next.

if you are a girl i bet you wear jeans.

FEIND! how dare you!

it's not a big deal, right? so what's the deal with one girl wanting to wear a beard and "act like a guy?" whats the big deal with some guy wanting to wear a freakin dress?

as for those people that have surgery... are people that get tattoos weird? are people that get their ears peirced weird?

THINK! and take a freakin anthropology or sociology course so you learn that there is 1. what society perceives 2. what can be 3. what is
Haha... That's so funny, because I don't even have to say anything. You just proved my point. lol If you're a girl, wear the beard. If you're a guy, wear the dress.

But don't ******** up your perfectly healthy body. Just don't. Find another way.

What evidence do you have that supports your claim that this is a "society inflicted disorder"?

Many other cultures in the past have had transgender people as a part of their culture. Some cultures have even embraced a third gender as a part of their culture. The idea of people living a gender identity different from the sex they were born with is not new. It is only the sex reassignment surgery that is new.
Third Gender In History

The American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association both agree that the best way to treat people with Gender Identity Disorder is to help them transition. So you're wrong. Changing their bodies is the cure.

Not to step on anyone's toes, but I think the term "Third Gender" is offensive. Transsexuals are either male or female, they aren't some third option.

Also, certain "third genders" in those different cultures aren't even applicable to people with GID.

I'm sorry Rosetta. I didn't mean to offend but as soon as I posted that link I realized my mistake.

The point I was trying to make was that the idea of living as a gender different from the sex a person is born as is not a new concept. Some of societies referred to these people as a third gender. For example, the kathoeys of Thailand consider themselves a third gender somewhere between male and female.

I did not mean to imply that transgender people are a third gender. Unless of course they see themselves as such. There are some people who choose to identify as neither male or female.

I'll have to look it up when I have access to a DSM, but I think you can still be diagnosed with GID if you have dysphoria but identify as bigender or non-gendered. I'm not completely certain on that though. This stuff isn't covered at an undergraduate level as much as I wish it was.um sweety, if that were true they would ALWAYS be what they were born. you cannot tell your doctor 'i'm a girl' if you are getting checked out for cancer. then he will check for ovarian cancer rather than testicular cancer.

furthermore it IS in our society considered a THIRD gender. that's why we have a different name for it: transexual.

other societies and cultures have other genders, some four genders... and i think there was even one with five genders.

gender isn't about what they identify themselves as. in this case it's about how society identifies them. hence the third gender in our society. we view there as being an 'other'

I kinda agree some of these mental illnesses are mainly giving people an excuse to act like that for example ADD OCD all those kinds of illnesses well I think I should be diagnosed with most of those because everyone is obsevive about something everyone easily gets distracted by something (yes I know with the people who are diagnosed with it actually do have problems but maybe some of them just need to learn to work with it)and you know if that is one of those things the gender thing I do not feel like I fit in with other girls in the least I think most of them are stuck up brats (well at least most of them that I know) I don't get why they get up early to fix their hair and make-up with me as long as my hair is brushed and washed I don't care I quite like my sleep but I still am perfectly fine being a girl I am proud to be one of those who disprove the stereo-type I know my rant is probally very wrong about the mental illnesses but they have a name for being shy for goodness sake!

"Mental illness" is a term that doesn't really match up with GID and gives it really bad connotations. They're not crazy.

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. You're just using conjecture and hearsay with absolutely no proof.

The fact that I fall for someone only because I mistake that person for a man means that I can only love a man. Loving an illusion =/= loving a person. Just because you love a character does not mean you love the actor who played him.

Good for them?

If a friend of mine could tell me that he has schizophrenia the day we met, a trans-sexual person can tell me that he or she is a trans-sexual. There are people who will date a trans-sexual individual while knowing that the person is a trans-sexual. There is no reason to impose on people who will not want you if they find out what you are. That is deceit and insecurity and I would not deal with either.

...it's easy, without too much fooling, to pass for cultured in our ranks.
It means you can have romantic feelings for someone, but those feelings could change abruptly once you find something out about them. It does not mean you can never develop romantic feelings for a transsexual.
We all meandered through our schooling haphazard; so, to God be thanks,

A person is what I know this person to be. I develop feelings for what I assume this person to be and that person exists in my mind according to that assumption. This is the same as asking "could you ever love a serial killer?" No. He could impose on me as something he is not and make me fall for him under false pretences but had I known who he was, it would have never happened. Yet, there are women who fall for serial killers while knowing exactly who those people are. That is the difference. Can you love someone for who that person is? Becoming infatuated with pictures your mind drew up with that person's help or without does not really mean much and only indicates that I can harbour feelings for that person only while staying completely ignorant (aka - I cannot love that person).

...it's easy, without too much fooling, to pass for cultured in our ranks.

Did you really just compare a transsexual to a serial killer?

Transsexuals are presenting themselves as precisely what they are. You cannot assume to know everything about someone all the time, and you cannot assume that your ideas of what constitutes a certain category is the same as theirs.

I am a boy. I fit under my definition of a boy. It's not my fault if I don't fit under your definition of a boy, and I am not being deceptive if I don't disclose my medical history to you.

Edit: And I would hope people in a committed relationship would want to share everything with each other, but not having shared intimate details about one's life until a comfort level is established is not deceitful.
