x Sarnath x Captain Verd I suppose that, according to Olya, a person who does not tell you about how much they like broccoli the very first time they meet you is actually lying to you about their affinity for broccoli. Fiend! They should not be tolerated. Not all people are okay with that sort of thing. Some people are straight and would be disgusted with the idea of dating someone that was a "transsexual." Now why the hell did you put the word transsexual in quotations? |

Yaminon x Sarnath x Geisterfahrer x Sarnath x Um, no offense, but if you have a v****a, you're a girl. By law and by most people's logic. Maybe to yourself you're a "man" or whatever, but in most people's eyes you're still a girl. I never understood why this kind of thing matters so much to people. So you don't want to be a girl. I don't really see what's so ******** awful about being a girl, but okay. Why would you be so uncomfortable in your own body? Why do you think being the other gender is a solution? Maybe you have big problems in your life. Maybe you have issues with yourself. But I don't see how being the other gender or pretending to be the other gender is going to fix these issues. Just be YOU. Forget about fitting into gender stereotypes, or being hung up on what society thinks you are. I probably sound like a bigot, but I really don't understand why people get so hung up over this. Take your ignorance elsewhere. Transgender people are not pretending to be the opposite gender. They are uncomfortable with their bodies because they have Gender Identity Disorder, and living as the other gender is the solution. It isn't about gender stereotypes or being hung up on what society thinks of you. Transgender people are not rejecting their gender role. They are rejecting their gender identity. The only issue transgender people have with themselves is that they were born with the wrong damned set of sexual traits and chromosomes. But all these options are available, so it gets the people who are prone to that kind of thinking all riled up. Do you think people worried about this stuff 100 years ago before these "treatments" came out? Nope. They just went on with life. Sure, some things about each gender suck. Each has its ups and downs. But changing your gender and permanently ******** up your body is no cure for mental illness and being unhappy with your life. =/ No, this just shows your ignorance. There is a massive amount of historical proof of people living in the gender roles they were comfortable with despite the social repercussions of it. The only difference is that we can intervene medically now to help people out. Back then all they could do is live out their lives in the best way they knew how to. Binding breasts, trying to disguise the physical characteristics that caused them so much pain. This isn't about society. This is about a disconnect with the body. You should really look up the suicide statistics for transgender people. This isn't a choice, this isn't something someone can just "deal" with. Some people would do anything to be healthy. =/ I don't see why people put themselves through all this. Surely there must be some other way. |

There is a problem with the brain developing to "expect" and align itself with primary and secondary sex characteristics. There is no other option for me. It is this or suicide. I don't want to live with my body like this. I don't want to live being viewed as something that I have no connection to in my mind. It isn't a general mental illness. It is a very specific medical problem. Very specific in that it deals with the body, and the treatment, therefore, is specific as well. Treat the body, as there is no way to change someone's sense of self. Studies have been done for years and years. The only option for those of us that experience dysphoria of this kind is medical intervention by physical transition. Trust me. I don't want to live this way. But there is no other choice. There is no other way. |

So you're wrong. Changing their bodies is the cure. Not to step on anyone's toes, but I think the term "Third Gender" is offensive. Transsexuals are either male or female, they aren't some third option. Also, certain "third genders" in those different cultures aren't even applicable to people with GID. |

I can empathize with the kind of pain and distress that people with GID go through, and it is not your place or my place to make decisions about how they alleviate that pain. Obviously for many people, the pain of living with the wrong genitals is worse than the physical pain of surgery. |

Rosetta Celestine What evidence do you have that supports your claim that this is a "society inflicted disorder"? Many other cultures in the past have had transgender people as a part of their culture. Some cultures have even embraced a third gender as a part of their culture. The idea of people living a gender identity different from the sex they were born with is not new. It is only the sex reassignment surgery that is new. Transsexuals are either male or female, they aren't some third option. Also, certain "third genders" in those different cultures aren't even applicable to people with GID. I'm sorry Rosetta. I didn't mean to offend but as soon as I posted that link I realized my mistake. The point I was trying to make was that the idea of living as a gender different from the sex a person is born as is not a new concept. Some of societies referred to these people as a third gender. For example, the kathoeys of Thailand consider themselves a third gender somewhere between male and female. I did not mean to imply that transgender people are a third gender. Unless of course they see themselves as such. There are some people who choose to identify as neither male or female. I'll have to look it up when I have access to a DSM, but I think you can still be diagnosed with GID if you have dysphoria but identify as bigender or non-gendered. I'm not completely certain on that though. This stuff isn't covered at an undergraduate level as much as I wish it was. |

"Mental disorder" is a poor term too, though I admit it's technically the one used by some professionals. Transsexuals are not crazy. |
