You should consider taking an intro psych course; this is an idea that has been thoroughly explored and, in the end, not supported - human brains simply don't operate the same way as computers (this is why AI has not progressed nearly as fast as people expected)

would you need to be conscious to be intelligent?

uum.... to be intelligent is basically to know a lot of stuff, right? i think so. and i think you need to be conscious to know things.
you could think of it as a set of primitive tools - like rock daggers - that have been integrated through evolution - different experiences and uses - to be able to slice and dice tomatoes in so many different ways. all of the most effective ways are genetically carried on generationally, albeit they are still rough versions of what they could be, hence stone tools. the brain is a kluge essentially. nothing streamlined or fancy by any means.
Computers do not generate a perceptive mind.
the plasticity thing... we have computers that can do that now. connectionist machines. nerual networks. they can learn.
Computers don't have to be electronic. If memory serves correctaly the abacus is considered one of the first computers.

Actual plasticity? As in rearrangement of circuits? I doubt it. If its indeed true, then its getting very intresting. You sure its not just AI that has the ability to learn?

Anyhow, untill they can reach true plasticity like the human brain, it will never be like the human brain.

true. and i completely agree with that. but there are different definitions to the word computer. i'm pretty sure "the thing you plug a keyboard into" and "any electronic device that computes" and "any device that computes" are all acceptable definitions. I just chose one to be my working definition for the argument.
Why does the inclusion of desire mean that the brain can't entirely be a computer? Seeing as it's a more advanced computer pre-wired for it's own self-preservation, I see no reason that a computing device wouldn't seek out the things it decides it needs. Onc eneeds are met, I see no reason why the same computer wouldn't begin occupying it's time with activities and the attaining or newer and better hardware to go along with it's software.

It's just a thought.
Until it's more than a complicated abacus it's not a brain.
