Is Richard Dawkins generally right? Does he have all his facts straight, or is he jsut a religiong bashing assclown, looking to be the leader of atheism?

Dawkins is a brilliant evolutionary biologist and an extremist atheist. We should listen to his scientific ideas, but his philosophical ideas are, well, just as shitty as those of any other religious extremist.

Quote:
Does being an atheist make you more intelligent period? Inherently or otherwise.

No, there are plenty of really dumb atheists that try and substitute science for religion when the two institutions are very different at a basic level.

Quote:
Is the OP just a crock full of errors that I failed ot miss becasue I was basically, ranting?

Well, you went into an environment you knew would be hostile to theistic views and were greeted with hostility. I am rather confused about why you posted this (think of an atheist bursting in in the middle of a mass and calling into question the Bible).

Quote:
Does the history of a group of people make them wrong?

No, holding views opposite of reality makes them wrong (anti-evolution groups, flat earth society and similar groups).

Quote:
Do the religious teachings of a group make them wrong, even though they beleive they are right?

So long as the teachings do not conflict with observed reality, any opposition to the teachings is baseless and just as valid as the teachings.

So, I've been browsing the web and found videos, article, etc. on Charles Dawkins' book "The God Delusion" Frankly, my point here is that it doesn't just offend me, it really pisses me off. Charles Dawkins deliberately puts down any deity based faith, and then uses what is seemingly out going, controversial literature, lectures, and speech to back it up with. And the sad thing is, I've seen his books become a sort a sort of "Atheist's Bible".

Allow me to draw one very important point form his book. Very early on, he calls faith and religion delusions. He says anyone who has delusions, is classified mentally ill. He later on makes the connection. All religious people are mentally ill. God, Allah, Vishnu, and Zeus are no more provable than a orbiting tea cup, or a unicorn.

Now, about the Atheist's Bible part. I frequently use and online chat messenger hybrid called PalTalk. It has voice and video capability, and a wide variety of rooms to search for. Of course, the most popular rooms are the religious ones. I try to stop by an atheist room when I get the chance to, just to listen in. (I'm not exactly Christian. I'm sort of a Deist, with Christian influence thrown in.) When I voice my opinion, it is immediately shot down. And not even in a decent manner. I get met with personal insults, sarcasm, bigotry, and vulgarity. It's like a pack of wolves jumping on a dead rabbit. They immediately regard anything as I say as the wrong opinion. And the worst part is they have a seething hatred for all Christians. Not just the fire and brimstone kind. They hate EVERY SINGLE ONE, and then try to use nothing but the Old Testament and history to back up their claims.

So...to discuss.

1. Does being an atheist make you smarter than anyone else?
2. Are deities and religion nothing but delusions and forms of crowd control?
3. Where did I mess up? Logical errors, etc.
4. Is faith just a crutch?
5. Are you ever skeptical that they might ever be evidence (scientific proof) of a deity?

1. No.
2. No.
3. No.
4. No.
5. No.

"Not just the fire and brimstone kind. They hate EVERY SINGLE ONE, and then try to use nothing but the Old Testament and history to back up their claims."

Okay you basically say, if they refer to the Old Testament, then they give credibility to the Bible.

You can't cite from a source and be like "oh wait, the REST of it isn't true"
It'd be interesting to remark that, actually, an Atheist must have more faith than a Christian. We just need to believe that God created the Universe, but they have to believe in a Universe being created by itself without any previous plan until it reached our intelligent life. And that's a lot more difficult to achieve, so you need more faith to believe things were done that way.

Well, one last question for tonight.

I noticed that "strong" atheist have, what I believe, is a common belief that theist are dangerous, uncaring, discriminatory, racist, materialistic, wastes of human beings.

Is this even true? I noticed Richard Dawkins states a few of the same things about God of the Old Testament, and uses evidence from things like 9/11 and the Crusades to support his arguments.

They require equal amounts of faith. A Christian believes in all powerful deity that designed a universe so that humans would arise and that he cares about them. That does not seem all that likely either.

An atheist just believes that that deities do not exist, not necessarily that the universe evolved with no plan or supernatural force.

We can look at our universe and you can say God caused it with plan X and another person can look at it and say that some other deity started it with plan Y and someone else can say there is no plan at all. Since the big bang puts a really nice wall between what we can observe an how everything actually got here, everyone is standing on the exact same ground (so long as they adhere to observed objective reality at least).
That is the first massive post I am actually attempting to read. But all in all, I <3 you. I learned something today. heart
Wouldn't the title of the book be a good indicator that it would piss you off? Seriously, stop whining. Nobody's forcing you to read it.

And really, what do you expect when you go into an ATHEIST chat room and say things that are, I'm guessing, contrary to atheism? I'm not going to go into the pro-life guild, start going on about pro-choice, and expect to be welcomed with open arms!

I also don't see how you can justify calling the book an "atheist bible." The only common belief that all atheists share is that there is no god of any sort.

1. In my opinion, atheism makes more sense. I don't think it's an intelligence thing, per se.

2. In some ways, to some people. There are people out there that are more malleable than Play-Doh, and religion is the sculptor. I pity anyone who can be so easily shaped. Though, I do think that, per the definition of "delusion," theism is delusion.

3. Done.

4. To some, like my answer to number two. I think that some people genuinely need the crutch, like they have a perpetually broken leg. Some people don't need it.

5. I don't understand the question.

I have discussed this too many times. I'm going to give short answers.

1.) Not technically, but I'd like to think so.
2.)dieties no... religion yes.
3.)You Tell me.
4.) This needs to be a little long answer....
It depends what you believe. Faith itself isnt really a crutch. There is nothing to be ashamed of to have faith, or believe in a God or Gods... just because I dont, doesnt mean it is wrong to do so.
I think the crutch is when people BLINDLY follow their RELIGION (note: not faith) When people just do what their CHURCH tells them, without giving any question as to why?

Its OK to believe, but be able to think for yourself as well... dont let religion and relious leaders do the thinking for you.

5.) The pure nature of a deity pretty much shows there will probably never be actual evidence of one.

I'm not pissed off that I was met with hostility. Now that I've looked more into the subject, I'm pissed that Dawkins and several of his advocates would drag out discrimination against atheists, and then go around, discriminating against theists. I mean, these people literally believe that anyone who believes in any diety is an idiot, speak thier mind about it frequently, and then ask to be understood.

It's not that I'm looking to be an excepted theist in an atheistic community. I'm jsut looking for some common decency. I'd like people to try to debase my claims, not insult me for making them. Since when did a personal attack ever proove a point?

The problem with extremists (atheists, Christian, Hindu, Buhddism, Islamic, whatever) Is that they want you to be like them. Any other opinion is viewed as bullshit. This is why extremists are generally not the nicest of people and are often rather dangerous to the world at large.

How are they being discriminatory?

Were you seriously expecting common courtesy and decency? Well, I see why you're all in a tizzy. Courtesy went the way of the dinosaur long ago.
