So, I've been browsing the web and found videos, article, etc. on Charles Dawkins' book "The God Delusion" Frankly, my point here is that it doesn't just offend me, it really pisses me off. Richard Charles Dawkins deliberately puts down any deity based faith, and then uses what is seemingly out going, controversial literature, lectures, and speech to back it up with. And the sad thing is, I've seen his books become a sort a sort of "Atheist's Bible".

Allow me to draw one very important point form his book. Very early on, he calls faith and religion delusions. He says anyone who has delusions, is classified mentally ill. He later on makes the connection. All religious people are mentally ill. God, Allah, Vishnu, and Zeus are no more provable than a orbiting tea cup, or a unicorn.

Now, about the Atheist's Bible part. I frequently use and online chat messenger hybrid called PalTalk. It has voice and video capability, and a wide variety of rooms to search for. Of course, the most popular rooms are the religious ones. I try to stop by an atheist room when I get the chance to, just to listen in. (I'm not exactly Christian. I'm sort of a Deist, with Christian influence thrown in.) When I voice my opinion, it is immediately shot down. And not even in a decent manner. I get met with personal insults, sarcasm, bigotry, and vulgarity. It's like a pack of wolves jumping on a dead rabbit. They immediately regard anything as I say as the wrong opinion. And the worst part is they have a seething hatred for all Christians. Not just the fire and brimstone kind. They hate EVERY SINGLE ONE, and then try to use nothing but the Old Testament and history to back up their claims.

So...to discuss.

1. Does being an atheist make you smarter than anyone else?
2. Are deities and religion nothing but delusions and forms of crowd control?
3. Where did I mess up? Logical errors, etc.
4. Is faith just a crutch?
5. Are you ever skeptical that they might ever be evidence (scientific proof) of a deity?

Adding this to the OP becasue I want to know some opinions on the Bible. Questions include:

Fact or Ficiton and why?
Faith or Delusion and why?

Penn and Teller: The Bible is Bullshit

Yes to all 1,2, 4, and 5, and the one thing you messed up on was making this post. If you despise this guy's opinions so much, you shouldn't have advertised him. Now I'm going to have to read this... xd

i feel the same way about christians.
i'm often called stupid because i don't believe in god.
and they don't even put up a good arguement
it's usually just "YOU'RE GONNA BURN IN HELL!! =o!!! HAHA LOSER SEE YOU FROM HEAVEN!"

I'm an Atheist, but this guy really pisses me off as well. He has no right at all to put other people down for believing in something and having faith. And the "Atheist's Bible" part made me laugh. After reading this, I think I want to kick this guy in the teeth. I actually envy people who believe in God or anything religious... Sometimes I wish I had that kind of faith. Why can't people just let everyone be who they are? sad That really pisses me off...

1. Does being an atheist make you smarter than anyone else?

No. The only thing that can make you smarter than anyone else is being smarter than everyone else.

2. Are deities and religion nothing but delusions and forms of crowd control?

A thing needs to be proven false before belief in it can be called delusion. Belief in the untestable or otherwise unverifiable aspects of a religion cannot be delusion. Belief in a 6010 year old Earth and intelligent design is delusion, but it is not the religion itself. It is misconceptions about science on the basis of religion.

As for crowd control, the primary verifiable purpose of religion is crowd control, yes, but that is not always the primary function of it. When it is abused, it can be harmful to social order.

3. Where did I mess up? Logical errors, etc.

You seem to be generalizing all atheists on the basis of a few you met over the internet. The singular of "data" is not "anecdote."

4. Is faith just a crutch?

For some people it might be. Faith, like most things, is a tool. It may be designed to be more efficient at one thing, but that does not mean that it cannot accomplish other things as well.

5. Are you ever skeptical that they might ever be evidence (scientific proof) of a deity?

I don't know what's going to happen in the future, so I refuse to form a belief on whether or not humanity will invent a god-o-meter or deity detector. People say that it's impossible to prove or disprove a god or gods, but people also used to say that heavier-than-air flying machines were impossible.

The need to be observed and understood was once satisfied by God. Now we can implement the same functionality with data-mining algorithms.

Who's Charles Dawkins?
Darwin's and Dawkins' ungoldy (no pun intented) lovechild?

I think the idea that people of Faith are stupid is one that is encouraged and held by many people who don't believe. This is sort of backed up by the idea that someone of Faith cannot, and does not "believe" in Science. The idea that someone might view science and Faith as two more or less unrelated issues is one that people ignore or forget. I think on both sides stereotypes are pushed, and that pushes ignorance and hatred. I don't think Faith (or the lack thereof) has anything to do with intelligence. Unless something big happens to them personally to push them to one side or another, I find that a lot of people more or less stick to what they're raised with. You'll get the occasional very logical person who decides that Faith isn't logical, but you get the occasional person who gets converted by being invited to Church, or some such thing as well.

As for proof. Anyone who tells you they can "proove" any sort of God or Gods is BSing you. Anyone who tells you they can "disproove" any sort of God or Gods is also BSing you. It cannot, and will not be proved, and trying to do so is missing the entire concept of "Faith".

You COMPLETELY miss the point.

There's a madness to my methods.
You can't help what some people think. I'm a Christian, and proud of it. They may think they're smarter (not saying all of them do) but really, I don't think they are. An aethiest (sp?) is not necesarrily any smarter then someone with religious beliefs.

No, religious preference means little to nothing in terms of actual intellectual capabilities. Religion might hinder your view of the natural world in terms of conflicting philosophies, but since being athiest does not mean not being religious atheists can face the same problems.

That's unknown.

3. Where did I mess up? Logical errors, etc.

Didn't pay that much attention.

4. Is faith just a crutch?

Philosophy > Faith; so if faith is but a crutch, the underlying philosophies are the same. All philosophies require faith and acceptance.

That I am sir, but I do not denounce the faith in a diety, and I do believe in one, but I acknowledge faith will most likely be the only venue availiable as proof.

It's Richard Dawkins
And please READ the book rather than just articles about it before posting on it.

well if i missed the point, why didn't you explain it to me?
you know, instead of just pointing out that i missed it.
that is not helping me at all. (:

umm...I dont know......frankly, religon is just what it is, its not a justification of anything or a condemnation of anything.its just really an aspect of life taken way too far in todays world.
