As a novelist, the prospect that people might write yaoi fan fiction about my straight characters only amuses me....

But on topic, it strikes me that most fan fiction is done for personal gratification. Written for and by people who are obsessed with a certain fandom.

People really want the story to go a certain way, or to put themselves in it, or want to indulge in the idea of certain characters they love having sex. It's a little weird, and it can degrade the author's original intentions until the characters are unrecognizable.

Not to mention the fact that it's ******** stupid most of the time. I've heard people tell me that the canon was "wrong." I'm not joking, here. That's right, their distorted fandom image of a character is "right," whereas the canon is "wrong."
I have noticed that I'm less annoyed at Yoai Fanfiction in general, and by far more annoyed at some of what seems to be the more frequent Yoai/slash pairings. For example, SasuNaru, HarryDraco, HarrySnape and HarryLordVoldemort (less frequent yet still amazingly annoying) really grate on my nerves. But most of the time I probably hate it because its so absurd. That and the Fanfic writer's Union is really good at pumping out crap. But hey, its not limited to gay ships either, for some reason everyone loves a good NaruHina ship, yet I find it disturbingly... bad. Maybe its just me.

I'm just waiting for someone to write a fanfiction about Voldemort finding out that Dumbledore is a homosexual, and decides to use his horrible charm to seduce him. While they're having hot, gay sex, Voldemort works sinister magic and creates the first case of the AIDS virus in the Harry Potter fandom.
It's not "Art" as it is both not original, nor is it a good replication. It's tasteless crap fourteen year olds write.

Agreed.
Now as an example. I don't mean to be offensive, cause if you like reading this stuff then by all means go ahead, but when I read as a summary something along the lines of:

Quote:
When Draco Malfoy finds out that the Golden Boy of Hogwarts is selling his body to the night he gets out his wallet. HD in all its angsty loveliness.

I can't help, but want to violently kill something.

That's because you're a person.

Well its good to know I'm not alone. One gets depressed shifting through the s**t, so as to find good authors and series. I've tried to develop a niche and not stray from it for fear of burning my eyes.

Just stay away from fan fiction and you'll be fine. Wander into Barnes & Noble, and spend $15.00 on a nice hardcover, and usually, you'll get good material inside. wink

... If it's not book nine of the series and they don't have books one, three, eight, or ten of said series... Has anyone else noticed that trend?

I think it's because they got several copies of book one, and then they were sold pretty fast.

I tend to stay away from series as well, for that reason, and on the rare occasion I get one, I get it in completion all at once.
Alright. I'm a slash shipper from the Harry Potter fandom. Now there is a lot of good fanfiction out there if you know where to look. And by good, I mean novel worthy and where 'canon' has not been changed and the characters are still in character. I also admit there is a heap of absolute awful fanfiction out there written by 14 year old girls. Like below...

Quote:

You'd have to pay me to read something like this. It sounds terrible. D:

But I'm going to post something I found on a HarryxDraco site which I think sums up what the appeal of writing and reading slash fanfiction is...

"First, it lies in the satisfaction women find in the security and equality of a relationship between men, which due to cultural, political and economic reasons, is still often sadly missing from a relationship between men and women. In a relationship between men, there lies an inherent equality of the sexes, where the parties are free to respond to each other in the most frank of fashions.

Second, it stems from the appeal of the “forbidden”. In an age where sexual promiscuity abounds and most social prohibitions have faded away, homosexual relationships remain the last bastion of the “forbidden” in society. Gay lovers of today are the Romeos and Juliets of the past. In Annie Proulx's short story “Brokeback Mountain”, she brings to the fore the social condemnation of the gay relationship in 1963 between two Wyoming cowboys which ultimately ends tragically. Over and over again, gay stories of our time showcase the social condemnation and ridicule of this form of love.

Third, as the fandom is primarily written and illustrated by women, the stories contain a psyche that would appeal intrinsically to a woman's sensibilities. These are women writing for other women about love and sex, in a way that only we can understand and appreciate. The sexual situations portrayed, and the development of the relationships are often uniquely 'feminine' in their unfolding. Everything from guaranteed mutual sexual satisfaction to romantic dinners and letters professing undying love create a world of love and courtship that is a feminized ideal. The male characters are also physically ideal, often drawn as breathtakingly handsome and sexual in appearance."

Ok soo.. I ship HarryxDraco. I know it's absurd. I know it's never going to happen in books or 'canon'. But I still enjoy it. It has a Romeo & Juliet.. opposites attract appeal to me. It's entertaining to read when I've got nothing better to do. Basically all authors are trying to do is write something they and other people can enjoy. It might seem silly, badly written or wrong to you but really, whatever floats their boat. If fanfiction bothers you, don't seek it out. I know sometimes it's difficult to avoid but just let people be. You can still be a fan of a book/tv show/movie without having to enter the crazy world of fandom.
Eh.
As a yaoi reader myself I've seen some real crappy ones. There are a couple of good ones, and when the the yaoi's all about original characters it's fun to read.

The bad ones...
I don't even understand HOW people can say PLEASE CONTINUE on those things!
Macai
Fan fiction writers say that it's to "expand upon the story" of something, but they rarely stay with the canon even remotely. Often the entire point of fan fictions is just to add yourself into the story, or to make characters from the book get in romantic relationships which they simply wouldn't get involved in, because they were "meant to be."

Can someone please explain to me why girls write Yaoi fan fictions where badassed, mean sons o' bitches suddenly become sensitive and kind with one another, and then have passionate gay sex?

Psychologically, I can understand why a heterosexual person would like to see two members of the opposite sex in sexual situations at once, but why must they be torn out of their original characters?

Why can't they make their own characters for this? The act of taking characters out of character does not bother me, but the pretension involved in contesting the validity of a novel's, movie's or series' canon astounds me.

But this sort of thing may be how art evolves; from one thing, something only vaguely relevant is derived. And from that derivation comes the standard.

On the cynical side of this argument's coin, it might just be idiots producing tasteless garbage. Maybe Yaoi Fan Fiction is just crap that bored, horny 14 year old girls write. Maybe it's not true art.

My opinion is that it's the latter. What's yours?

Im a gay dude who writes fanfics and the ONLY thing I try to avoid is taking the characters character away. I think, (personally) that most women just like fantasy better than what actually occurs. So they take there own desires impose those onto the characters character and then once they realize even once that they can do that it becomes infinitly easy to do it again and again. Im not sure but HEY! Im an artist. The only art I cannot judge without bias is my own. So hope you understood me and hope you can still stand me.

Bye all! HAVE A GREAT LIFE OF HAVOC AND I HOPE YOU NEVER DIE! MuPa- 1990.
