Why is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn considered racist?

I am currently reading The adventures of Huckleberry Finn in my English class. And my teacher mentions that the book is banned in a lot of school districts.

Why? I am just curious....

The phrase "n****r Jim" comes to mind. As the "N" word is not considered acceptable in today's society. Back when it was written, though, the word to many was just a word. Twain was not using it in a derogatory fashion in the book and Jim and Huck were friends who needed each other.

While the specific word that describes this escapes my mind at the moment, Twain rights how the people of the times spoke and is completely realistic with how his characters interact with each other. Some people today may find this racist in some ways because it really is. It's no reason for the book to be banned in my opinion, though, because it helps people today understand what the world was like during that time period, something that should never be forgotten.

Because people today are stupid enough, that anytime they hear or see the word "n****r", it always sends up a flair, and makes them think "THAT'S RACIST!"

Even though, if they'd actually READ the ******** book, they'd see that n****r is not automatically racist, by default. It's how it's USED, that determines whether or not it's racist.

Even though it's unacceptable to say "n****r" these days, back then people didn't view it in the same way. That doesn't make it okay, but that doesn't mean that the book should be banned.
