The Institute of Medicine concluded in its Mar. 1999 report titled "Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base":
"A number of animal studies have revealed respiratory tract changes and diseases assoicated with marijuana smoking, but others have not. Extensive damage to the smaller airways, which are the major site of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and acute and chronic pneumonia have been observed in various species exposed to different doses of marijuana smoke. In contrast, rats exposed to increasing doses of marijuana smoke for one year did not show any signs of COPD, whereas rats exposed to tobacco did."

A. Animal and human biological systems are different.
B. Statement is neither pro or con nor specific to asthmatics.
C. extensive damage to the smaller airways, and acute/ chronic pneumonia is more than a negative "side effect".
Can you show that the medical benefits outweight the negative side effects of marijuana?
EDIT: I forgot to mention, your only reputable source is (http://www.druglibrary.org/Schaffer/hemp/medical/tashkin/tashkin1.htm).
I say that it does not. A systematic review, published in Archives of Internal Medecine (2007), of 34 studies done between 1966 and 2005, concludes that short-term exposure to marijuana is associated with bronchodilation. Long-term marijuana exposure and physiologic date were inconclusive. Long-term marijuana smoking is associated with increased respiratory symptoms suggestive of obstructive lung disease.
