If you time travel, you are creating a legitimiate past event meaning everything beyond that point is the world as it would be with that event happening.

If time travel happens, then it was always going to happen as that is what the over all cause and effect lines of the universe were working towards.

i.e. someone at a certain point in history will time travel to a certain other point in history as a result of this..

There was never an 'alernate' universe as the reality you live in even before you have said "righto, I'm gonna time travel" - is the reality created by you time travelling. If nobody has turned up saying they have time travelled yet it is either because, we simply haven't time travelled back this far..understandable as I suppose the further back you wen't the more damage you could do. Kinda like when you set a ship off on a voyage, if you are out by one degree when navigating then that one degree can put you off course by thousands of miles after a while.

I think also there was somethign saying we couldn't time travel unless there was a gate..or..'thing' to receive us at the other end. They were saying in New Scientist that we might only be able to travel back in time to like.. the year 2012 or soemthign because they're building some sort of device which could act as a receiver.

That said as I havne't the foggiest idea about the underlying mathematics I'm proabbly completley wrong since I'm using basic talk logic rather than actual this equals this which means only this can happen logic.
