You're giving them an opportunity to strengthen their resolve.

This isn't a battle of people. Its a war of ideals.

Quite the confusing situation, then. By fighting back, in their eyes I'm justifying their "Holy war", but at the same time, I can't just ignore their atrocities and must try to find a way to destroy them.

Which is exactly why it isn't a good idea to run in guns ablazing.

Well, unless your objective is to eliminate the threat by killing them, but that still takes some degree of finesse.

And if their goal is martyrdom, killing them is giving them what they want.
