Basically the government are now forcing our ISPs to monitor and report each of our individual households' internet use. Like phone tapping. Like the KGB.

They already monitor internet use. How much you download is analysed for billing purposes. If you go over the 'cap' they charge you more. I'm not sure but I think there's also a set amount of browsing you can do as well. Of course this would be harder to top the cap.

At present, the real way to get busted for copyright is to upload material that infringes copyright. Making it available for the rest of the internet is considered a worse offense. Similar to how you're more likely to get busted for dealing drugs than just 'having them', and in the case of the latter the charges are less severe.

They measure the amount of bandwidth you use in Megabytes.
The more you use the more they charge.
They only know how much you use....not what you do...

And it's only if they find out what you're doing and figure out who you are.
That's rare and less likely to happen without any regulation.

I've had an idea. Lets not bother with this election and let the Queen rule instead. She can hardly do any worse. I mean come on, politicians are just vulgar men pleaser's at the best of times.
So, the Labour government are s**t-heads. Tell me something I didn't already know in 1997.

As for the specific law, it doesn't matter; legislation like this is just piss in the wind, the government can't really regulate the Internet without bringing about such massive inconvenience that they'd be thrown out.

Wait, the OP isn't even from the UK?

A good portion of the Western world has turned its back on freedom of speech, information, thought, and expression in favor of a more economically efficient McCarthian system. If he's from Australia, the States, the PRC, or Britain, this issue applies to him. If not, he's still a man after my own burning revolutionary heart.

um...i am english, and i live in england, and i am a girl. *gasp* [edit] and i'm not really a midget

do you actually believe that, or are you just quoting the party-line?

it is as the exec says 3nodding and ours is uncapped wink

I kind of have little knowledge of the net. It's kind of from learning from real life things.
You can learn alot from the real world if you apply different ideas and concepts to it.

I hide vocal disagreement with certain aspects of the past and current government's agenda.

My American countrymen thought a similar bill to be "just piss in the wind". It passed.

I'm sure Stuch is ready to surrender himself completely to any government whimsy because he is such a pious soul.

Lord knows, there are no boundaries, for their very formation is an admission of guilt.

I'm pretty sure this whole crackdown on internet piracy has been escalating since that Napster bullshit ages ago.

Taxing the internet is total asshattery, I feel kinda ashamed for Parliament for passing that, it was pretty much inevitable that the music companies/what have you, are pretty much becoming "big brother" like entities that are issuing warrants against those who pirate music/games/etc and fining them huge with possible jail time.

Seriously, some of those music sharing sites bring huge amounts of advertisements and possibly income as some folks may as well buy the merchandise if they like what they downloaded (not everyone, of course).

Oh well, hopefully America doesn't start something like that.

Goes w/o saying doesn't it? They're only interested in billing you. The more you use the more money they make. If people were to be cut off they'd lose business.
THATS SHITTY. God I'm glad I dont live in england....

which, i expect is why some of them (like TalkTalk) have fought the bill really hard. that and it is bad for business if your customer thinks you are going to kiss and tell.
