This post has been made so many times...jeeze...why does everyone ask the same damn question over and over. Whites just cant say it. Its stupid. Get over it. and look up the origonal thread about it.

Get yourself a dictionary.

The original term "n****r" was used to describe ANYONE of ANY race, ethnicity, color etc... who was deemed unintelligible, base, incoherent, ignorant, illiterate, etc, etc...

This is not true...The word comes from the Latin word for black. Slaves were called negros because of their dark skin color. That was turned into the slang form n****r...

Since black slaves were seen as ignorant, the term was used to insult people of any race...If you wanted to insult someone you compared them to the lowest form of people...(Kind of like saying "That is so gay." It is an insult because gays were/are seen as being bad)

Ok, so let me void the word "original" in my post. rolleyes

No, that doesn't fix your statement...You make it seem as if it is just like calling someone "stupid", like it crosses race boundries...WHY is it used is the big deal...It is used because being black (the original niggers) was a bad thing. The word has a very destinct racial history.

Correct. A distinct racial history which I did not dispute. Did you have a point?

I think Black americans who use it should be shot. We should also shoot all whites who are too stupid to realise that this word is not supported or considered appropriate by blacks in the rest of the world.

You're going to have to go a long way to justify shooting people for saying words.

While you're at it, prove it is not supported or considered appropriate by the rest of the black population of the world.

I spend most of my time in predominatly black countries in the Caribbean and i assure you the use of the "n" word is not commonplace even among the poor.

In fact Rastafarians take a strong stand against it, and not just against the "n" word but also your habbit of addressing each other as "dawg".

My friend from Botswana says its not common there either.

I concur. I said before that my fiance is Caribbean...he will not use it.

BTW, I love you sig...it made me laugh! Brilliant! heart
Are you referring a selective racial history? Applicably only to one group? And you are trying to dispute that since my statement did not reference this association that I am disputing it's relevance?

My point is that your orignial statement is completely incorrect. I proved that point fully. I then continued to elaborate on why your original statement was an inadaquate argue to make. You did not dispute the history, but leaving it out is just as bad. Leaving out the history part of the word completely changed the implied meaning of your statement.

Actually, If you had just refrained from making an incorrect statement from the begining we could have saved ourselves a lot of time and typing.

If you are going to try and dispute someone's topic you really should 1) do some research 2) put in important, meaning changing details.

Are you referring a selective racial history?
Applicably only to one group?
And you are trying to dispute that since my statement did not reference this association that I am disputing it's relevance?

Yes I am refering to black history (since the word originally pertained to only blacks). I would refer to jewish history if we were discussing the word Kik or the phrase "Jewed down the price."

Yes, blacks had a different history only applicable to that group. I did not say it was worse or that other groups didn't have bad histories, only that it was different.

I am absolutely saying that your admitance of the history is disputing it's relevance because, without the history mentioned, it completely changes the implied meaning. It was ignoring the fact.

Thank you so much for recapping what I said. I am glad you understand.

Anyways,

as I cleared stated I did NOT in fact dispute it's relevance because it did not pertain to my post. My goal was not to lecture on black history and I'm sorry if you had that misconception. Are you now saying that n****r was not applicable to every race as an insult?
Please keep in mind you brought the WHY into this conversation which was by no means my intention to elaborate on. You would realize that by reading my first post. My OBVIOUS original intent was to clear up the fact that the term does indeed apply to every race as an insult. If you want to play black history month you're on your own.

I, in fact, have no idea what the goal of your post was since it was very factually wrong. I believe your goal was to say that "n****r is not a racial term because it's original meaning applied to everyone." That is wrong. It is a racial term that was originally applied to only one specific group. If this was not your intended meaning you did a poor job of trying to get it across.

I am saying that originally n****r was not applicable to every race as an insult. It took some time for that to happen.

Your post was utterly and absolutely wrong and you have just wasted a good amount of time trying to convince me it wasn't.

By no means am I trying to convince you. Where did you get this notion that I think it is not a racial term because I certainly never said that. Your undeclared assumptions seem to be the backdrop of all your posts so I believe I will end this here.

Thanks though. Enjoy your evening.

You speak in this post in present tense. If this was your original intent then you should not have used past tense language. The use of past tense completely changes your meaning. The use of the word "original", completely gives a new meaning to your post.

I am a stickler for these sort of problems. I am a Language Arts and Social Studies teacher.

I would have to play black history month on my own, I agree.

That's why I made it clear that I was wrong in my usage of "original" quite a few posts back. No worries my mom is an English teacher so she's a stickler for the language stuff. Anyways, you're a SS teacher and by that credit alone I will assume you know more than me about history wink but my intention was never to dispute historical events only clear up a statement which I apparently have made even more difficult to comprehend through my lack of complete and thorough definition. So thank you for the original clarification. I must sleep now. Goodnight.

who cares? and who says "stickler"? my intent on posting this thread was to discuss the use of the word n****r and other words that fall into that category. yet here we have a language arts teacher dying because someone used the wrong tense. i mean, really, get over it.

so, in your classroom, do your students use the word n****r? i noticed you said "language arts" instead of "english," which lead me to believe that you teach junior high or elementary school. i don't associate with younger kids. just high school. i'm curious about how how many of them use it. and is it mostly the african-american kids that use it?
