there are about 7 white people at my school. the rest are hatian, african american, or latino. no one else.

i hear the word n****r pop up so much, in class, at lunch, after school, on the activity bus, in the hallways... it's rediculous.

"ey, n***a, wheah you goin'?"
"ey, n***a, whass good?"

i swear, i've not heard a white student, none of the seven say that word. and i've talked with them about it. i asked them how they felt that the minorities can say it, but if they say it they'll get offended and send they're posse to jump them.

they weren't even concerned with it being unfair or anything. they didn't want to use the word, because they recognized the power in the word. they knew the history of the word, and were surprised that some didn't, and that those that did still used it.

Haha very true...my fiance is Afro-Caribbean, he refuses to say the word...he will skip it when he is singing a song. He DJs and he will play songs with the word still in it but he self-censors himself.

He cringes at the word Cracker as much as I do the n*word

Once you outlaw something it becomes more powerful...by making it "illegal" to use the word, you are just giving it more power...then when people said the n*word it would be a serious blow...imagine what kind of hurtful things people could do then.

The reason the word started to be used freely by blacks was to get rid of the sting the word had...The word was first use freely in comedy skits by Blacks...
like making fun of yourself before someone else has a chance...if you admit you have a big nose, and embrace it by making jokes out of it, then someone doesnt have as much of a chance to tease you about it.

This is not true...The word comes from the Latin word for black. Slaves were called negros because of their dark skin color. That was turned into the slang form n****r...

Since black slaves were seen as ignorant, the term was used to insult people of any race...If you wanted to insult someone you compared them to the lowest form of people...(Kind of like saying "That is so gay." It is an insult because gays were/are seen as being bad)

no one has done any studies on the matter, so i have no official stats if thats what you're looking for.

But as a well off black man who has had the opportunity to travel fairly widely, i can tell you that i have observed that the "n" word is popularised by rap music and is mainly used among those outside the US who are wannabes, or who have lived in the US for some time and picked up bad habbits.

I find that americans on a whole are not taught as many traditional values regarding resepct, and what is proper when speaking to someone in real life. I spend most of my time in predominatly black countries in the Caribbean and i assure you the use of the "n" word is not commonplace even among the poor.

In fact Rastafarians take a strong stand against it, and not just against the "n" word but also your habbit of addressing each other as "dawg".

My friend from Botswana says its not common there either.
