Pick up a trade instead of going to university or college. The schooling is shorter, less expensive and many trades are highly employable (electricians and plumbers are in fairly high demand these days, for example). I went to school to be a medical transcriptionist. It was a 9 month program and gave me tons of options - I don't actually transcribe anymore but I do work at a hospital and make a good wage. I also have no major debt to speak of, which is kinda big for someone in my age bracket. By the time my boyfriend finished school he's going to have a huge chunk of debt to pay off - and he's actually had the majority of his education so far paid for.
