Actually, contray to popular belief, the french have been fairly well off as far as military conflict, I cant really think of too many wars they have officilaly lost, wit hthe esception of world war 2 and the finishings of the napoleonic wars... I'm a Napoleon fan, so I would say Paul Barras would be a good person to research as well as the Duke of orange. If you want Maximelien Robespierre is also VERY VERY good, but that would likely get you into JJ Rousseau.
