It's because you don't have to live with being murdered.

Rape is considered worse in western culture due to the hypocrisy inherent in judaeo-christian religions, all of which discourage sex as something sinful, shameful, and evil. Violence is regarded this way as well, but to a lesser degree, so people can justify things like holy wars.

Both should get the death penalty.

Sex is sacred and more guarded than life, I know it's weird but that's the case.

Becoming adapted to a certain phenomena dulls the human mind to it. Frankly, I am not surprised. Though 9/11 is still treated as a ghastly event, many hardly think of what they are referring to when they mention the Jewish Holocaust. Though the latter is much, much worse, there is a certain repetitive nature in it. Many become fully unaware of how flippantly they are using a term.

Rape could be much the same. A particular film or book could again raise awareness, but it will soon be gone with increased conversation of such. Personally, I am looking forward to the days when crime investigation shows and films have ceased their endless dispersing, and we find horror in these acts. Until then... I hope that it does not affect actual cases presented to and judged by courts.

Rape. The victim is left mentally scarred if not killed afterwards.

How is surrendering of the body more offensive than extinguishing a life?

I recently had a short debate regarding the movie "Irreversible", a very psycho-violent French flick starring Monica Bellucci ending with her raped for 20 minutes. (Yeah, they showed it).

More comments leaned towards how awful the idea. The morality. That viewers walked out of the theater once anticipating the scene. I wasn't moved.

I raised that we can sit through mind-numbing hours of murders & suicides. Shot up, cut up, strangled, burned alive, you name it. It's in our screens & literature. Saw's a big hit; on the 6th movie, right? That's cool & encouraged! A violent act leading to murder can be simulated & witnessed without controversy. Why not rape? Murder lost its seriousness. I would think they'd be of equal concern.

My take? I don't think it's a moral issue- that would encourage a double-standard. I plainly believe we're used to it. Violence appears more than sex on screen maybe? Perhaps we need as frequent rape scenes to grow accustomed.

You tell me.

Personally I don't think it's a good idea if society becomes accustomed to rape or murder in movies

Rape is meant to be more hurtful to a person because the fact that someone's dead means they don't have to live with the trauma thereafter- they're dead, they don't have to worry about feeling dirty, used, abused, filthy, worthless, whether they're going to become pregnant with the ******** that raped them.

It's not that death isn't worse, it's that you can't see what it does to a person. The dead are dead, they've suffered and gone, but the raped have to live with everything they've been through afterwards.

Both are terrible things and I personally don't see the need to show them (even if they are fake) on film to the general public. I understand violence is every where in the media but must murder and rape be made part of our general entertainment??

To answer the question I would have to say they are both horrific things to have happen to yourself or a person you care for but I think Rape is worse for the person who is being raped or murdered, while murder is harder for those who cared about the person to deal with. Yes many people are able to get through this(rape) after therapy/counselling/etc. and lead a "normal" life but what about those who don't? Or the women who get pregnant? Many rape victims also get HIV and/or other diseases from their attackers, isn't that just like being handed a death sentence? Also their are numerous victims of rape who either attempt suicide and/or commit suicide. They aren't technically being murdered but they are taking their own life as a result of the attack.

First of all Irreversible is a brilliant movie.

Secondly. Because rape is a more taboo subject. It permanently scars people emotionally unlike murder because, well, your dead.

PS: If you think Irreversible is bad check out Audition or Begotten.
It was my 1st time viewing. I didn't even have a synopsis. I'll check the others you've mentioned. Thank you!

Skittish Nature-Boy

In conclusion, rape is nowhere near as bad.

You beat me. .-.

So to make the two equal you're suggesting there be more rape scenes as opposed to cutting down on violent scenes? Do you want people to be number or more sensitive to these issues?
Personally I prefer folks to have a great threshold for both scenes.

Here's a permanent scar, You're dead.

Sound like you wanna be raped or killed now?

I personally would rather be killed.

At least then I wouldn't have to live with it... seeing as I'd be, uh, dead. No consciousness, dark void, and all that.

So you would rather miss out on 60 some odd years of your life for 1 very traumitcal Moment?

What about if you were killed but raped first? Still want to be killed? Or will you do me the favor and not lie to me and say you want to live this time.

No, the topic is would I rather be killed or raped. I would rather be killed. And since you asked "What if I was raped then killed?", I would be dead, so.
Um, that's not the topic.

I'm asking why folks are more tolerant of violent deaths than rape in entertainment.

Murder for sure is worse. Plenty of people can learn to deal with being raped and live normal happy lives. It's definitely traumatic, but there is life after rape.

That sounds like it. I figured some antiquated puritanic customs were responsible but I didn't want to start another "hate God" thread.

The only valid censorship of ideas is the right of people not to listen.
