I realize that this has come up already, but the thing that really bothers me is that the FBI apparently investigated Maj. Hasan because he was emailing a cleric who the FBI believes is an Al-Qaeda recruiter (http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/official-nidal-hasan-unexplained-connections/story?id=9048590) and that he may have defended suicide bombing elsewhere on the internet (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/11/05/national/main5542704.shtml). The FBI says they didn't investigate further because his emails were within his first Amendment rights, but that's ridiculous. He's a soldier; he has no First Amendment rights. Those were suspended for him when he held up his right hand, honestly.
I've seen articles claiming that the FBI told the Army and they did nothing, and articles claiming the FBI never told the Army. Either way, some one better investigate and whoever saw this and just ignored it needs to be reprimanded.
I do think it's more likely he was just one guy who finally had enough than an actual terrorist, but when you sympathize with and try to contact the enemy, your SO needs to have a talk with you.

The issue isn't the man's religion. He was just a crazy guy. How many Christians go crazy like that? It's tragic that in the US we can't respect a person's religion unless they are Christian. This is one of the last acceptable forms of discrimination, and it's despicable.

As far as having Muslims in the military, you can't screen them without violating the First Ammendment. Freedom of Religion applies to all religions. It's pathetic how so many people forget that. A really easy solution is to not include questions about religion in military paperwork. It's irrelevant, especially regarding a person's willingness to fight for their country.
I agree with this.

How ridiculous would it be to discriminate against some ones race or religion all because of one mentally unstable man who went off the deep end. We have to remember that not all Muslims hate us, so it would be wrong to do this to all of them that join the military.

Well, the links you just posted just goes to show we're never really told the full story of these tragic events.

Shhhh! We're not suppose to talk about that smile

(the US also financed the Taliban up until 2001, and financed bin Laden's al Qaeda network in Bosnia during the mid to late 1990's)

Indirectly, I think you forgot to mention that

And to Dainichijess
The UCMJ still allows 1st Amendment as long as it doesn't go outside of the UCMJ. This is all based off of interpretations so the right JAG could easily convince people what he was doing was legal. Because he was so vague, as least from what I got of the story, you couldn't really convince people he was a terrorist. And don't go off of news for the story, wait for a real report.
