Removing Muslims from the military over one persons actions would be foolish.

He's certainly not the first person to go apeshit and shoot a bunch of people, while we certainly haven't been screening out the others (any more than normal).

The backlash from forcing Muslims out of the military would be enormous as well. And kicking highly trained killers out of the forces for no reason is like running through the woods in a deer suit on day one of open season. There's going to be a lot of intelligent, resourceful and angry people if we do that.

I saw other rumblings that it was due to fellow soldiers' treatment of Hasan due to his religious practices. Given the reports I've seen of extremist Christian groups infiltrating the army and the abuses this has caused, rooting out and expelling these elements may be for the best of the country.

Well seeing as how it was inaccurately reported that he was dead yesterday, the fact of the matter is that this is speculation and or heresy, and we really don't know what happened.

However, regardless of his motivations, to assume that all muslims are terrorists waiting to happen is shamefully discriminatory. It's like saying all christians are evil because Hitler was (he claimed) christian.

In an interesting twist, the Major graduated from VIRGINIA TECH before joining the army.

Muslim, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan shouted "God is Great" in Arabic while opening fire at Fort Hood yesterday hitting 43 persons before being shot himself. Hasan is alive and in critical condition at a nearby community hospital under guard by both local and military police.

This is going to be bad for Muslims in the American Armed forces. It is most likely that he was going through middle age crises in addition to being deployed against his wishes. The two most dangerous groups of people for mass murder are teenage boys who suffer from fail, followed by middle aged men going through male menopause faildom.

However, there will be people who raise the question of whether it is sensible to have Muslims in western military outfits especially those that espouse radical Islam and who vocally protest our aggressive presence in the oil rich countries and Afganistan.

Americans will never tolerate another Japanese interment camp a la WWII for Muslims in our population. We learned from that one. However, is it possible or not to remove Muslims from military service? Would it be a good idea or not?

My stance is that if we remove Muslims from our armed forces it might make people have a false sense of security while also causing many Americans to begin fearing and shunning civilian Muslims.

I was actually worried the US government would start rounding up Muslims and throwing them in FEMA concentration camps that they've been building when 9/11 happened. I remember the film "The Siege", where a much smaller terror attack caused that.

The US did falsely round up, imprison and deported thousands of Muslim men in the wake of 9/11, but thankfully they didnt put any in American gulags...the US government just ended up murdering tens of thousands of Iraqi, Afghan and Pakistani civilians.

The attitude toward Muslims, Arabs and Middle Easterners began to take on a Jews in WW2 era Germany sort of tone with the endless "evil Muslims are out to get us" propaganda tone

I was pretty sure when the news broke of this sickening tragedy at Fort Hood, that low and behold it'd be a Muslims that dun' it.

Wouldn't treating Muslims differently in the military be sort of unconstitional? The first amendment says Congress won't make a law favoring one religion over another, and that they won't prohibit free exercise of a religion...

I read an article a while ago, it said there were about, I think it was at least 3000 Muslims in the US military... Why should they be punished because other people like to be extreme in their religion?

Well, I wouldn't compare it to Jews of WW2, but I think it fits to compare them to communists in like the 60s or whatever (I don't remember what decade it was, but people would get so pissed if you were a commie). A lot of kids at my school were insisting Obama was a Muslim and how they would be so scared to have a Muslim president... There are some Muslim kids at my school. I always wonder, what do they think of that? Also, if the people who wouldn't want a Muslim President are so set in their beliefs, they should go up to a Muslim kid and say it right. To. Their. I've read that in WW2 people who already spoke German, Italian, or Japanese were generally prized and potential interpreters by the military, and that Vietnam and Korea were similar. History would reapeat itself, wouldn't it?

I thought all Japanese speakers were thrown in concentration camps under FDR? smile

Btw, did you know several Arabic speakers for the US armed services have been kicked out simply for being gay?

It could. My understanding of the army religious populations was that Asatru actually outnumber serving Muslims, which would make the Muslim population to pull interpreters from rather slim.

Germanic pagan and occultism as a belief system has more of a footprint in the armed services than adepts of Islam? Well, given Pagan Black Metal fan's notoriety for burning down churches and killing in Europe, one could say the same thing about them as people are stereotyping all Muslims with.
