Yes, that's the place..
The fiasco here has been still going on since the shooting happened on Fort Hood. I had family calling and blowing up my pages like crazy freaking out and worrying, had to tell everyone that the family and I were okay and that we didn't live on post(thankfully). For once, I'm glad the hubby was deployed this time...he could have been in the middle of all that(he's stationed at Fort Hood). My prayers and sympathy are with the victims and their families. So far, 13 are dead, 30 wounded(with 6 in the ICU and several more undergoing/awaiting surgery).

As sad as this is, I have almost no doubt that another tragedy will occur from this somewhere in the US. A sikh will probably be killed or at least severely injured by some overly patriotic bafoon thinking he's doing some kind of service to this country.

The military does need to do update their screening and psych evaluations fast, however. They've had problems before since they were accepting pretty much anybody due to the low enlistment rates. It was inevitable that some mentally unstable person was going to go off like this. That person just happened to be a disenfranchised man of Arab descent, which is unfortunate considering the time in US history.

I can't find info on the first, and the second is probably not public innformation. I base my information on book sources, mostly. I've read that in WW2 people who already spoke German, Italian, or Japanese were generally prized and potential interpreters by the military, and that Vietnam and Korea were similar. History would reapeat itself, wouldn't it?

It could. My understanding of the army religious populations was that Asatru actually outnumber serving Muslims, which would make the Muslim population to pull interpreters from rather slim.

The issue is also whether those people speak the same language. From what I understand from family, Afghanis speak a different language, Pashto. If I'm not mistaken, the Q'uran was and is written in Arabic, so assuming the Muslim knows Arabic, it wouldn't necessarily mean they'd be a vital part of the mission in Afghanistan, at least. In Iraq, yes, it would be useful, as they speak Arabic.
