Natalie Heimel and her fiancé, Edward Mallue Jr., a pair of captains in the Army, were walking from their wedding rehearsal on Saturday at the 16th tee box at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in Hawaii when they were informed they'd have to move their wedding, scheduled for the next day.

President Barack Obama wanted to play through.

It was the second time that day that the couple heard from the nation's commander in chief, whose affinity for golf has, at times, caused political headaches for the White House. Stationed in Hawaii and knowing the president spends his Christmas holiday on the islands, they invited him to their ceremony on a lark. They had received a letter earlier on Saturday saying Obama regretted he couldn't come and wishing them happiness on their wedding day.

“He apologized and congratulated them.”

Jamie McCarthy
“It was kind of ironic they got the letter from them and then, within hours, they were told they had to be moved due to him,” Jamie McCarthy, Mallue's sister, said in an interview. “It was emotional, especially for her—she’s the bride and in less than 24 hours they had to change everything they had planned.”

The golf course, located on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, is a regular stop for Obama when he's in the state, with the Ko’olau Mountains framing the front nine and majestic views of Pacific coastline spanning the back nine. It's also a favorite spot for Mallue, a golfing enthusiast.

Still, anyone planning an event at the course when the president may be in town is warned about the potential for last-minute shuffling, said Naile Brennan, manager of K Bay Catering, which was handling logistics for the wedding. Brennan said they had other sites ready to go, and the couple ended up choosing the lush, green lawn near the home of Colonel Eric Schaefer, the commanding officer of the base, which offers an elevated view near the 16th hole.

“It's much prettier and much nicer venue unless you're an avid golfer,” Brennan said. “It's more secluded and there are no golfers yelling, 'Fore!'”

An administration spokesman referred questions about the day to the military base, and it's not clear the White House would have been informed about the wedding in advance. After Bloomberg Politics inquired about the scheduling conflict, Obama put in a personal call to the bride.

“He apologized and congratulated them,” McCarthy said, adding that it was a “wonderful talk.”

“We were all there, it was perfect,” she said. “Made their day.”

So this is the newest jerk move by the president to his military he obviously despises, regardless of the fact that they are the reason our country is so great.

yeah freeing bergdahl the deserter, releasing terrorists. Pissed off so many in his platoon!

And Tahmooressi took way too long to be freed, but I'm glad he finally did. Of course a prison swap again of people who have killed other americans.

I thought it was very ******** rude of him, and want to know if the couple was reimbursed for the cost of two separate venues for a wedding. Our president is a ********.

A phone apology doesn't fix ruining someone's wedding. There's more than one golf course in Hawaii, he could have gone somewhere else.

Yeah... I have no idea how you are getting your position that the president doesn't respect the military.

From your own link, we get the following facts:

--- The golf course makes it clear to people who are trying to reserve space in their facilities that any reservations are subject to change.

--- The couple was informed of this before they made their reservation for their ceremony.

--- The couple was provided an alternative location which they accepted.

--- The President apologized and the couple accepted the apology.

Seems like if anyone comes off as disrespectful, its the golf course which seems to take reservations which don't actually reserve anything.

The rest of yours are all either insignificant (G. dub has a photo of him saluting while holding a dog) or don't really have anything to do with respecting the military.

Try harder bro.

According to the golf course spokesperson in the article, it is their policy to tell anyone who reserves a space that they are subject to last-minute shuffling and that the couple still agreed to make a reservation. Further, they were provided with an alternative location that the couple freely accepted. The article also notes that its not even clear that the president was made aware of the wedding reservation at all.

Fanatical Zealot

I would have gone with the needless budget cuts in areas it was stupid to do so and then the reckless spending in areas the military even refused to accept, like accepting 50 tanks the U.S. army has so far refused but shutting down the rifle competition, which would have fielded hundreds of thousands of rifles for our aging, 50 year old designs, which were improperly created in the first place. Which were, surprise, the same price; oh, and the rifle competition was shut down for "budgetary reasons"; my a**.

Granted, that's mostly his defense people overlooking all that rather than him directly in most cases, but it's been pretty bad. Especially with the whole, let's shut down production of the F-22, the actually working model we have of our current aircraft (The F-35 is not yet finished), and that has an unblemished 221-0 kill ratio against all other known fighters (as in, 1 F-22 = 221 kills), and talk about why we don't need two fighter aircraft (cause, the F-15, F16, F-18 etc., NEVER been the way the U.S. has worked in the past, using varying models), and save almost no money because the project costs have almost all already been spent.

Anyways, unintentionally disrupting a wedding is bad, but I don't really see how that means he hates the military per say.

Although it does seem kind of annoying, he is the president, so he likely had an important reason to leave.

Garbage

I love people who use the coffee thing to say Obama "hates" the military. Apparently the President isn't allowed to make social blunders, and therefore they're not social blunders, they're slurs on whoever-the-hell people feel like getting indignant about the way the President acted towards during a particular fifteen seconds.

Yes greater then what was it? Ten countries combined? Oh yes, like the top ten other countries then us we spend on the military, yet people still complain we have a WEAK military. Yes. I'm sure we are weak when we still spend more the Russia, china, Saudi, Frank, UK, Germany, Japan and India, COMBINED. You could probably throw in mexico too, and the US is STILL spending more.

I love how people think things are all Obama's fault when they are not. I know there are people who think Obama gave them them cancer. YOU THINK I WAS ******** JOKING ABOUT THAT?

You know, I constantly pull things out my a** for conspriacy theories and just google it, and I seriously find out these things I just pull out of my a** are actually things that are REAL. People really believe this sort of s**t... I seriously can't even.

As much as I'm willing to question Obama, Operational Security plays a good deal of importance in all of this.

Quite likely the fault lies with someone several levels down who didn't contact everyone to ensure no other important things were going on at the same time. Many of the President's daily "plans" aren't under his control.
